Just Speak Up

Ross Detwiler is the latest.

Before him--Craig Stammen, Cristian Guzman, Shawn Hill, Chad Cordero, I think even John Patterson, never initially said a word about any apparent injury problem. They all remained quiet until the situation got worse. I am sure there are more, but that's just off the top of my head.

What's with not speaking up when your health is in question? Playing with pain for the team only goes so far.

I just don't get that. Every professional organization has a host of medical advisers at their disposal that can diagnose, determine and advise any athlete on virtually any ailment--big and small.

Come on guys, just speak up--it's for your own benefit. And Our Washington Nationals as well.

When it comes to injuries, silence is never golden.

  1. Because even in this world of modern medical technology, athletes are afraid to admit to physical problems because:

1)They are considered cowards and pansies

2)They end up having surgery and lose their spot on the team. Just ask Matt Chico.

  2. And they end up hurting themselves, their career and their long-term potential. Any person that is a major league player should be given every chance to recover, rehab and find himself again by most any organization. To believe, as a player, you will not be given every chance to redeem yourself is short-sighted and really doesn't help anyone.

Being afraid to sit down because of fear of losing a job is usually not a sign of someone who has full confidence in his abilities.

  3. How has Matt Chico lost his spot on the team? He's in spring training now, with as good a shot as anyone else to make the rotation. All he has to do is perform. Just because the press has ignored him for almost two years that doesn't mean the team has.

  4. Hi, I enjoyed your blog. I think that all players really need to do is stretch, but sometimes they just get too cocky and forget, that's why you see the one's that just got big paydays getting big injury's. Also, I disagree with SBF, because I think playing through an injury is the smartest thing you can do, just ask Cal Ripken.

Also, please check out my latest blog entry, a Prospect Profile on Stephen Strasburg.
