And Then There Was Light

At Approximately 6:30PM on December 1, 2008--New Nationals Park gave its first glimpse of what's to come--at night. Workers turned on the stadium light fixtures down the right field line for the very first time. Our Good Friend, Colleen, emailed all excited over seeing the stadium lit from their home in Rosslyn, Virginia.

....And it was Good. Isn't that a fabulous thing to see? There's still nothing like walking into a lit up baseball stadium and seeing the glow coming through the tunnels. This is sure gonna be fun.

SBF: Okay, I know there are still trades left to be done, but am I the only one of your loyal readers wondering what we're going to do without a leadoff hitter? Manny's comments about Milledge hitting from 2 - 7 raise that obvious question. I refuse to contemplate the horror of FLop being a starter next year. Does that make Guzman the leadoff hitter? Is there anyone else on the roster who could (even imaginably) hit first?

Let us pray for a lefty on the mound for both us and them.

  4. Anonymous: Its true. Washington still does not have a leadoff hitter. It was surprising to hear Manny rule out Milledge as a leadoff batter right away. If he is as talented as explained--you would think Washington would consider using him in the same manner as Cleveland does with Grady Sizemore. FLop can't be the leadoff hitter, nor Guzman. It was interesting to read The Mets are considering using Church as the number 2 hitter in his lineup. The Nats would never had him bat in that position. Interesting how different team view the exact same player.

Starting tomorrow in Nashville--its going to be mighty interesting what might happen.

Seems like if lead off is not Guzman then we must get a new 2nd Basemen who can be lead off hitter. I agree Millidge could but it sounded like Acta is going to "protect him" from that stress.

No other room in the lineup if not SS or second basemen at the top. Is it just me or are we going backwards in 2008? Jimbo is now talking about 2012 roster not 2009 or 2010 anymore.

  6. As I mentioned in yesterday's post--for the short term, The Nationals have regressed. Unsure about leadoff, unsure about catcher, unsure about middle infield, and the usual suspects for starting pitchers. Bowden seems openly in wheel and deal mode. Acta seems expecting that fact. The Milledge trade has set alot of uncertainty in motion.

  7. Milledge is not a leadoff batter. Makes poor contact and is impatient. Sorry to beat a dead horse.

Church batting second is a nice idea. With Reyes on first, he will get plenty of fastballs. Billy Martin did the same thing with Graig Nettles for a while.

I wonder if part of the reason for lighting the stadium at night is to help the grass grow. There aren't as many hours of daylight now as there are in the summer, and even in the daytime the shadows of the grandstand get in the way.

Ryan Church is definitely not hitting 2nd for the Mets, he will hit 7th. Luis Castillo is hitting 2nd for the Mets.
