McGeary In The Fold

When neither Team President Stan Kasten, nor any HIGH MANAGEMENT are seen around RFK Stadium on GAME NIGHTS--you can bet somethings up. And, there was. Negotiations until the late hours. A back and forth that resulted in Our Washington Nationals signing Jack McGeary to a contract. Their 6th round pick that no one wanted to take a chance on--as he had "DECIDED" to attend Stanford. What a STEAL for OUR TEAM with a FIRST ROUND TALENT.

More tomorrow, but here is The Official Press Release:

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

NATIONALS AGREE TO TERMS WITH LEFTHANDER JACK MCGEARY,

THE CLUB’S SIXTH-ROUND PICK OF THE 2007 FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT

The Washington Nationals today agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Jack McGeary, the club’s sixth-round pick from the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. Nationals Vice President/General Manager Jim Bowden and Scouting Director Dana Brown made the announcement.

"We are very pleased to be able to draft and sign three left-handed starting pitchers - Jack McGeary, Ross Detwiler and Josh Smoker - all blessed with first-round talent," Bowden said.

McGeary was named the 2007 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Massachusetts after going 6-1 with a 0.88 ERA in seven starts as a senior for Roxbury Latin High School in West Roxbury, MA. He struck out 80 in his 40.0 innings of work, leading his club to a share of the Independent School League championship. The lefthander also earned ABCA/Rawlings Third-Team High School All-American honors. He had entered the 2007 season as a Baseball America Preseason High School First-Team All-American.

McGeary, 18, was rated as the 18th-best pitching prospect, 27th-best overall, among draft-eligible players according to Baseball America. He was also rated by the same publication as having the second-best command among draft-eligible high school pitchers.

The Nationals have now signed each of their first 20 selections from the 2007 draft.

GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. The Lerners Ponied Up. They Promised and They Delivered. Exactly, what they said.

I am impressed and very happy!

"The Washington Nationals reached an agreement late last night with left-handed pitcher Jack McGeary, a deal that solidifies a spectacular draft for a team that is in the process of rebuilding what had been a farm system bereft of talent." – Barry @ WP

Well done Nats, Well done Lerners. The best $1.8 Million Lerner will ever spend....even if he never pitches at the MLB level. Timing is everything as is perception. Lerners needed to do this and they did!

I will be very pleased press submit on my Season Tickets at the new Park even with the big price increase!

Now we need a CF with a big bat and some big time hitting instruction for Kearns and friends.

Well - as a Snodfart U. alum myself, we shall miss him pitching at the Farm, but readers may recall that I predicted that he would become a Nat, just prior to turning into a Stanford entering freshman pumpkin. Tough financial decision, too, since the average Stanford engineer going into a silicon valley start-up gets about $1.75 million in stock options! (1990's joke, before the bubble burst...)

Agree completely with jayb, and batting 20 out of 20 says something for signing your picks, alright.

If its left-handed pitching you want, the Nats have stockpiled a real arsenal. Come offer your poor, tired, huddled masses of 30-30 players for one or more, other MLB teams.

Trust in Kasten. All Good.

I'm still expecting to see SBF chase Stan Kasten at the next Presidents Race! :-) Good job, Nats!

How annoyed must Stanford be? They recruited this great baseball player, he agrees to go, and he will go, but he won't play! I'm guessing he lasts a year before he decides the bright lights of Harrisburg are too alluring and the grief he gets from his fellow Cardinal is too much.
