Jesus Flores--Looking To Make Up For Lost Time

From the day Jesus Flores made the big league roster for Our Washington Nationals as a Rule 5 draftee from The New York Mets in 2007, he's been considered an All-Star Catcher in waiting. All that promise though vanished over the past two seasons when Flores couldn't get healthy and remain on the field to play.

On May 9th, 2009, Jesus suffered a stress fracture in his right shoulder thanks to a freak accident. D.C.'s starting catcher took the brunt of a fouled off pitch behind the plate in Phoenix directly to his right shoulder bone. Despite expecting to only miss three months of action, Flores has now missed nearly two consecutive years. His recovery was set back further when he hurt his throwing arm in rehab. Only now--21 months after the original incident is Jesus Flores back playing again--looking to make up for lost time.

This past off-season Flores played Winter Ball, full time, in his native Venezuela. His manager was Nationals First Base Coach Dan Radison.  Nats320 caught up with Radison and Flores over the past two days to gauge Jesus' progress.

Nats320: How did Flores play in Venezuela this past winter?

Dan Radison: He played real strong. He played tough, just like the player we all know he can be here for us. He showed a lot of durability and that was important. A lot of people are worried about him because of his health—especially with his throwing arm. But he was very durable. There were even a few tough games where we played 13 and 14 innings, one run ball games, and he played all the way and he played great.

He’s always been a good hitter. He had a strong season for us down there. So I was real happy with what he did.

Nats320: Throwing has been his biggest issue since he got injured in Phoenix a few years back. You feel he is 100%?

Radison: Well, I can’t speak for him. But he played a lot of ball games down there and he was fine. He never complained about his arm.  So yeah, I would say he’s over the hump that way. I think he’s ready to go get them.

Nats320: Then you feel he’s ready to become a useful player again?

Radison: He’s more than useful, let me tell you, he’s valuable (chuckling). He’s Valuable!!

Now on to Jesus Flores' thoughts:

Jesus Flores: My arm is feeling very well. I feel great and I am just very excited to be back on the field and actually participating with my teammates in this spring training. It’s been far too long.

Nats320: Being out from playing for such a long time, how good was it to actually play in Venezuela this past winter?

Flores: A relief. It was very good for me just to get out there playing. Mentally, it really helped me regain my confidence and know I can still play and play well. It helped me understand that I was healthy to play baseball again.

Nats320: So whether we are talking throwing, hitting, fielding--you feel all your skills that you bring to the table are back?

Flores: All of them, in fact, even better than before. I am stronger and in better shape. But I am blessed that baseball and God has given me another chance to get back on the field. I really feel good about everything for the first time in a long time. My arm, my hitting, defense—everything is coming together. Everything is working very well.  Not only do I feel I am a stronger player, but I am a smarter player.  So I am just thinking about making the team.

Nats320: Clearly though it was tough being out for such a long time.

Flores: Yes, it was tough--really, really tough. There were some bad times when I had doubts, but now it is different. Since this season is now underway, I’ve said to myself, I am going to stop thinking about the past. I am going to stop thinking about the negative stuff. I am going to feel happy for myself.  I overcame all those troubles. I feel great because of that. I am healthy again and it’s time to just move on.

Nats320: Positive attitude always helps.

Flores: It also makes me more comfortable and relaxed. In the batting cage, on the field, everything is going my way again. I am going to prove to the team that my arm is 100% and I ready to compete again in the big leagues.  That’s all I can do. If I give my best everything will work out for itself.  I need to take away whatever doubt they might still have in me. In practice, in games this spring, I need to prove to them I can still throw out those runners.

I know I can hit.

WTOP's Craig Heist With The Big "Get" Interview Of Spring

If there is one popular young fan attending Spring Training for Our Washington Nationals in Viera, Florida this week--it's Little Andy, Sohna's Cheering Buddy--who sits next to The African Queen and I in Section 218 at Nationals Park. Everybody seems to know him. Attending spring camp for the first time with his parent's Charlene & Joe, Little Andy has been fortunate to get a baseball signed by many players, as well as, a personally signed photo from Stephen Strasburg yesterday. Today, he scored a autograph from his favorite player, Ryan Zimmerman, on a baseball.
Proudly walking around the Space Coast Stadium practice fields with his personally signed baseball from Zimmy, WTOP's Craig Heist picked up his biggest "Get" interview of the spring--an exclusive with Little Andy for WTOP listeners back in Washington.

Little Andy's Big News: "(Zimmy) gave me a high five and then signed my ball."

That's not only funny but a very nice little story.

P.S. By the way--Little Andy was born in 2005 when Our Washington Nationals played their Inaugural Season.

Mary & Mike--Expos/Nationals Fans

We are always fascinated by the many fans that come to Spring Training for Our Washington Nationals just out of love of their team.  Mary & Mike from Maine are perfect examples. For many years, they were ardent Montreal Expos Fans and even attended the final game Montreal ever played--at Shea Stadium--in 2004.  They witnessed the demise of their once proud franchise in Canada, but they never gave up on their players or their team when it moved to The United States Of America and this nation's capital for the 2005 season.

Today, Mary & Mike still support Washington's Major League Franchise, the former Montreal Expos, as their own.

Even after six years have passed since The Montreal Expos played their final game in Canada, this nice couple have stuck with their original franchise, Our Washington Nationals, as their favorite team. For Mary & Mike it's all about the dedication and fun of enjoying their Major League Team--through all the wins and losses.  They attend spring training each year, travel to various cities to watch ball games in the many unique ballparks (at least 25 different and counting) and, of course, have visited RFK Stadium and Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. during the regular season.

Mary & Mike are truly fans and they've been wonderful to meet and spend time with over the past few days in Viera, Florida. They are heading home tomorrow, driving all the way--33 hours worth--to Maine. Hopefully, Sohna and I will see them again at Nationals Park this summer. Or maybe, at a visiting ballpark on the road.  And if not, definitely at Spring Training 2012--somewhere in Florida.

Safe travels, Mary & Mike.  The African Queen & I had great time chatting with both of you.

Garrett Mock With The Quote Of The Day--2/25/2011

The African Queen and Garrett Mock have a running conversation that has permeated their encounters these past few days.

On the first day we attended Spring Training for Our Washington Nationals, The African Queen is chatting with Garrett Mock and he tells her how his son wanted to go out to the beach at night:

Mock: "Since it was a full moon we went crabbing on the beach."

A child's wish which his father granted.

This afternoon after practice ended, Garrett comes over to say hello and Sohna asks him: "Have you gone crabbing with your son lately?"

Mock: "No. But we went crocodile hunting yesterday?"

The African Queen: "And where around here would you go crocodile hunting?"

Mock: "In our living room!!"

Flat out funny.

We've got to tell you every single person within earshot broke into laughter. Mock smiling because he knew he had gotten off The Quote Of The Day to The African Queen.

Steve McCatty On Chien-Ming Wang

When he steps to the mound on a practice field today to throw live batting practice again, many front office eyes from Our Washington Nationals Staff will be closely watching Chien-Ming Wang. Attempting to return from nearly two years out of baseball due to injury, Wang has pitched without pain so far in training camp and is hoping to return to the Big Leagues this season.

Yesterday, Nats320 talked with Nationals Pitching Coach Steve McCatty about Chien-Ming Wang's developments.  Here is that conversation:

Nats320: You’ve now seen Chien-Ming Wang pitch three or four times this spring. Do you feel he’s finally turning the corner in returning to the player he was before his injury problems?

McCatty: Yes, I do.  He’s feeling better every time out. The velocity is not there or what it was three or four years ago. But also, we are not playing any games yet and it’s still early. But I do believe he’s getting better and better.

Nats320: We read the other day you made an adjustment in his arm slot. What was the reason for that.

McCatty: By moving his head, we were able to get his arm in a better slot to throw. He’s was leaning to far back. He’s a little more athletic than others, so we needed to get his weight over his legs (for better power).

Nats320: Despite his velocity not back to what it was before, has he regained the feel for his pitches?

McCatty: Oh yeah. He’s throwing some really good breaking balls. He’s got some real good movement on the ball. He’s got real good movement on all his pitches. His changeup has been good, everything has been positive.

Nats320: That being said, do you think he’s advanced enough to make it back this year in the big leagues?

McCatty: Hopefully, every time he goes out to throw he’s not had any problems or any soreness at all. He’s been able to complete all his bullpens and throw batting practice. Every time he goes out he gets a little better.  We’ll see, that’s the plan (shrugging his shoulders).  I hope he’s well enough, but like anything else, you’ve got to see how it goes.

Nats320: Has it surprised you that he’s actually put himself in a position to be considered nearly ready to go?

McCatty: No, not really, not from what I’ve heard about him (from training staff). Everything I’ve heard is that things got better from when he was in Instructional League.  So no, I’m not  really surprised. He looks a whole lot better than the last time I saw him.  He’s putting in the time and making the effort.

Nats320: He’s one of the most intriguing stories of camp because if he can make it all the way back, this staff improves greatly.

McCatty: That’s the plan but once the games begin we’ll see what happens. Only then will we find out for sure.

All About The Uniforms

With Space Shuttle Discovery taking top news honors today in this part of Florida and an MLB Players Association meeting early this morning, the only true item of importance on the baseball field--for us--was the spring debut of Our Washington Nationals new uniforms.  The 2011 Home Whites (white with red trim and red Curly "W" on the left breast) stood out against the bright sunny skies of Viera, Florida.

They really did look good and every player we talked to early this afternoon felt the same way about them.

Very sharp.
And finally--CAA Sports' Brodie Van Wagenen, the agent for Nationals Ryan Zimmerman, John Lannan, Danny Espinosa, Sammy Solis & A. J Cole was in camp today in Viera, Florida. Brodie is taking the grand spring tour touching base with all 33 of his baseball playing clients over the next two weeks in both Florida and Arizona.

Nothing Quite Like A Space Shuttle Launch

Over the past 26 years, I've been fortunate to witness 25 different Space Shuttle launches from the NASA Press Center at Cape Canaveral--including Discovery's Return To Space Flight after the Challenger accident, the delivery of the Hubble Space Telescope to space and John Glenn's triumphant return there as well. With Space Shuttle Discovery again sitting on Launch Pad 39-A for its final scheduled of 39 missions, The African Queen and I headed over to Kennedy Center Park in Titusville to watch the historic last liftoff after conclusion of Nationals Spring Training this afternoon.

Along with a couple thousand of our closest friends, the spectacle--as usual--did not disappoint.  While I took pictures, The African Queen enjoyed the launch with a couple from the United Kingdom who had been vacationing off and on in Florida for 20 years and had never been fortunate enough to witness one in person.

On a beautiful sun drench day, the weather could not have cooperated more. For nearly three minutes, until SRB (Solid Rocket Booster) Separation, spectators could fully watch Discovery work its way toward orbit and a rendezvous with the International Space Station.
We could not have picked a much better site for public viewing. Six miles directly across the Banana River from The Kennedy Space Center.

Nearly perfect in every way.

There is nothing quite like a space shuttle launch especially when there are only two more planned--Space Shuttles Atlantis and Endeavor will close out the NASA missions later this year.

Michael Morse--Being His Own Person

In his first full season playing for Our Washington Nationals, Michael Morse slammed out 15 home runs in a part time role. He also proved to be very versatile, playing 1st Base, 2nd Base and outfield--while talking lessons to be an emergency catcher. "Mikey Mo" just wants to play and will do everything possible to get himself more playing time. After training concluded at the Space Coast Stadium practice fields yesterday, The African Queen & I chatted with Michael Morse for a good 10 minutes.  As always, he was funny and on point.

Here is that conversation:

Nats320: We just saw at 3rd Base taking grounders?

Morse: Yeah, I am just trying to beat Zim out for the job! I am going to give him some serious competition.  Seriously, I am just keeping by skills there, polishing things, taking a little rust off at all the positions. Last year, there was one game where I had to come in and be the 5th infielder. There is always stuff like that where it’s good to be ready for the season. My main goal is that if Riggs (Jim Riggleman) has to go down to the end of the bench and see someone to put in there, I want him to have 100% faith in me to make me his choice.

Nats320: Then you will be working on being an emergency catcher as well?

Morse: Yep. I am going to get out the catchers gear, hopefully not soon (chuckling). But I am just going to have to pull that stuff out and show them I can be back there. I just need to be ready at each position.

Nats320: Although you just said that you want Riggleman to consider you first when he looks down his bench, you have a good shot at being an everyday player in left field this year.

Morse:  (nodding in agreement) Well, I hope so. Everybody wants to be an everyday player and that was one of my main goals when I got to the Big Leagues. But I am content with whatever happens. I have 100% confidence and trust in my managers and coaches. I just believe I’ve proven myself enough for them to give me a shot (at starting). Who knows what I can do in a full season?

Nats320: When Josh Willingham got traded an opportunity opens up. Did that trade get you even more excited for camp to begin?

Morse: Absolutely, it did. But at the same time, it doesn’t change my mental process. It doesn’t change anything I do. Like you two saw me today, I am still taking ground balls at 3rd base. They (the coaches) could tell me today I will be starting in right field or center field or whatever, but I will still be taking ground balls at 3rd base, shortstop, everywhere just to be ready.

Nats320: Is there a position you are most comfortable with right now?

Morse: (Getting a big smile on his face) The most comfortable position for me is the position I am in that day. (laughing—but serious) Whatever position is placed on that lineup that day, that’s my favorite position.

Nats320: Remember last year when we were all talking at Nationals Park in the dugout, you said at that time--everything just felt right about The Nationals. Is it still that way?

Morse: Oh yeah. There really is something here that feels like home to me. The way they (the franchise) goes about their business, the Lerners, the coaching staff. I feel like I fit here more than any other team. I just feel like my opportunity to exceed is just so good here. And I like the direction The Nationals are going. We are going up. We are going up and I’d like to be around for a while to be apart of that.

Nats320: That makes you want to come to camp every day?

Morse: You better believe it, absolutely. Usually in spring training it’s a grind, spring training itself. But here, I am excited for when the games start. I am excited to get into the outfield with Jayson Werth, Nyjer Morgan and Rick Ankiel. I am excited to see it all come together.

Nats320: There seems to be a seriousness about this camp. It’s very quiet this year.

Morse: Our main thing is leave the fun at the door. We are going to go out and win and winning is going to be fun. But just coming out and playing just to play is not something we are not going to be doing here. We have a goal and our goal is to win. And it’s a mindset that teams like Philly have. It’s that kind of cockiness that the whole team brings with them when they go in to play a team. That’s the mentality we want. We want to be able to go into New York and play The Mets and when we get out there for BP (Batting Practice)—we own the place.  The Nationals are here!

Nats320: We’ve noticed Livan Hernandez now calls you “Mikey Mo”.

Morse: Yeah, it sticks. But you know what, guys like Livo—the minute they stop talking about you is when you better start worrying.

Nats320: Knowing you couldn’t have the number 28 anymore (due to Jayson Werth taking that jersey number)—how did you arrive at 38?

Morse: OK, this is sort of long. When 28 left me, which was a very sad day for me. It wasn’t a number I’ve had all my life, but it was a number I’ve always wanted—especially in the big leagues. It just felt good on my back last year. And one of the reasons it felt good was there was another number 28 in Jayson Werth (then in Philadelphia) who was doing really well.

And so when I first learned we signed him, I thought: Oh, No!  I immediately began to wonder. And I am telling you, within minutes that I saw the ticker on the television screen announcing the news, I got a call from Wally (Mike Wallace—Clubhouse Manager). He said: There are a couple of other numbers open? Me: Oh, OK  (in a dejected sort of way).

The problem was—a lot of numbers are already taken. He told me we had to leave a couple of numbers open. I said: Well…..ok. They might be signing some more people. So I decided, 28..38, they are sort of close. I don’t really know anyone that wore number 38. So I figured I could be my own person and maybe start a tradition with 38.

Nats320: And then 28 is playing with you.

Morse: Yeah, 28 is playing alongside me. He’s right over there.  28 & 38—Werth & Morse.

Nats320: People tend to compare you with him a lot, does that bother you?

Morse: I love it!! As long as it’s not about the looks, because he’s ugly!! (everyone busting out laughing).  As long as it’s not the looks. But seriously, he is an outstanding player. And even in camp, just talking to him, talking baseball with him, he knows baseball. That’s awesome and I understand now why The Nationals wanted him here. He’s a big part of the team, both on and off the field. He’s just a great overall guy even though he took my number.

But I will let that slide for now. Just wait though when I see him in the streets when we are 55 or 56 years old—I might kick him at that time for taking number 28.

YOU TOOK MY NUMBER!!  YOU TOOK MY NUMBER!! (Kidding)

Highlights From Day Two--Full Training Camp

Sorry for the late post, there was an internet access issue last night that needed to be resolved

For the first time in quite some time, Chien-Ming Wang threw live batting practice this morning on Field Number 4 of the Space Coast Stadium Practice Fields. He wasn't overly sharp, but that was not the point. The very fact that Wang threw to hitters was a major step forward in his ongoing effort to return to the Major League Roster this season. Above is an 80 second video of a few of his tosses during his nearly 10 minutes on the mound.

Jordan Zimmermann threw live batting practice at the same time on Field Number 3. What's always impressive to watch when it comes to JZ throwing is how he uses his entire body. All good pitchers use their legs and Zimmermann has the proper mechanics to take advantage of his strong lower body.

Jayson Werth and Drew Storen drew a crowd of media and front office staffers when they faced off for live batting practice on Field Number 4. The last time they played against each other on September 19th at Citizens Bank Park, Werth crushed out a grand slam to win the game for The Philadelphia Phillies. The two made fun of today's situation when Storen brushed Werth back on the first pitch thrown. But after that moment, it was back to all business.

More interesting was watching Bryce Harper take batting practice moments later on the same field as VP of Player Development Bob Boone watched intently and offered advise to the 18-year old after each round of swings.

Considered a talented but raw young player, Nationals Prospect Destin Hood was seen walking through training camp watching some of the action on the field. Reporting to Minor League camp, this 20-year old prospect with exceptional skills is expected to begin 2011 playing for The Potomac Nationals of The Carolina League.  Last year, Hood was an All-Star in the Sally League for The Hagerstown Suns and is hoping to continue improving his talents on the field.  Once a prized football prospect out of Mobile, Alabama--Hood turned down football scholarship offers to both the University of Alabama and Auburn University to sign with Washington in 2009 for $1.1 million.  "I really don't miss football anymore," Hood told Nats320 yesterday. "I know I made the right choice in my career. I  just need to continue working hard so I can move up within the organization."

Livan Hernandez, Ross Detwiler, Jason Marquis and Tyler Clippard were a few other pitchers that threw live batting practice.

And finally, The African Queen and I ran into Amber and Sam D. Mann from Social Circle, Georgia. We met this enjoyable couple last year during spring training. Sam and Amber were Dodgers Fans before Los Angeles moved from their spring facility from Dodgertown in Vero Beach to Chandler, Arizona. Looking for a new team to support, they switched their allegiance to Our Washington Nationals.

P.S. A few bonus photos from today's practice session.
