Pope Benedict XVI At New Nationals Park

With The Official Word that Pope Benedict XVI will not only visit Washington, DC beginning April 15th, 2008, but also conduct Mass at New Nationals Park on April 17th--the opportunity arises to look at The Pontiff's Visit to South Capitol Street in a little different light--with humor.

And, all of this is written in fun. None of which--should be taken seriously or offend anyone. Because--unquestionably--The Pope's Visit to The Nation's Capital is a HUGE EVENT and SERIOUS MATTER. A Gathering in which I have NO DOUBT--I will be credentialed and attending for my television network. The Pope is a Serious Man--but his visit to New Nationals Park does provide some GOOD POTENTIAL HUMOR.

So--If Pope Benedict shows up in his infamous PopeMobile--will the sides of his vehicle be emblazoned "GEICO" as the sponsor. The Pontiff is in America--sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.

Maybe The Pope can let "The Most Thrilling Closer In The Game" borrow The PopeMobile for one journey to the mound during the 9th inning of a Save Opportunity. Any Help from Above for Chad Cordero would be more than welcomed by Our Fans.

Will his Mass, at New Nationals Park, be sponsored by Lockheed Martin (A Defense Contractor)? Will Communion be brought to everyone by McDonalds?

Will Our Lovable Loser--"Teddy" get a special audience with Pope Benedict? If anyone needs Divine Intervention--"Teddy" sure could use it.

Speaking of Our Racing Presidents--would they not be GREAT!! as Personal Protection for The Pontiff on South Capitol Street. Just the site of all them surrounding His Holiness--would be a SIGHT TO BEHOLD. What a Photo Op!! A Picture to be REMEMBERED FOREVER!! Really, it would be. Too bad--its most likely not going to happen.

Would My Best Friend Screech!! invite Pope Benedict up to his Bird's Nest--for an inside look at The Creature Comforts of His Home. Since The Pope speaks so many languages--could they converse?

Would Our "Jesus Battery"--Jesus Flores and Jesus Colome be blessed by The Pontiff? Maybe Pope Benedict can illicit enough confidence into Colome so "The Human Rain Delay" could speed up his delivery on the mound. No one pitcher in baseball slower between pitches than Jesus Colome. Pontiff--please help us.

And, "Church on Thursday" or any other day for that matter (April 17th is a Thursday) being yelled out by The Section 320 Faithful toward My Main Man!! Ryan Church--would take on a WHOLE NEW MEANING.

Yes--"Church on Thursday" would never be the same.

Finally--I can just see this moment. Our Manager Manny Acta--The Most Charismatic of Men. Not only can I see Manny getting an audience with His Holiness--but also--convincing Pope Benedict XVI to play catch with him. A least a few tosses. Yeah--if Manny Acta could get him to do it--that would be FABULOUS.

None of these possibilities are anyway near to happening at New Nationals Park on April 17th, 2008. But, it sure is fun to think about them. Please Remember--this is all written in fun.

But--what may well actually happen is Pope Benedict XVI Blessing New Nationals Park--just a few days after The Very First Game is ever played there. That's pretty good timing on his part. That's also pretty cool!!

I Can't Wait

With Grass now down and the Infield Cut at New Nationals Parks--visions of Major League Baseball are dancing in my head.

Yet, Winter is not even upon us, nor Thanksgiving or Christmas.

No--I can't wait for that very first game on South Capitol Street for Our Washington Nationals. Whatever date is finally chosen will be fine with me.

I can't wait to see thousands walking down Half Street from The Navy Yard Metro to enter the new ballpark.

I can't wait to see everyone looking, maybe gawking--smiling and, hopefully, very much enjoying their very first visit.

No--there is nothing like A FIRST IMPRESSION. And, nothing like Baseball, the Sport which everyone treats--like Family.

I can't wait to hand over for scanning--my very First Game Ticket to enter New Nationals Park, anxious to see its Inaugural Opening Day, or Night Drapings and Festivities Planned.

I can't wait to walk the concourses, witness EVERYTHING The New Ballyard on South Capitol Street has--in advantage--over The Old Ballyard on East Capitol Street.

Although, there are aspects of RFK STADIUM--I will forever cherish--and will miss.

I can't wait to meander all over The New Ballyard; relish in delight; take the escalators, maybe an elevator, see what surprises might still be in store for the many patrons.

I can't wait to witness those walkways, not only fully loaded with Fans of Our Washington Nationals, but hopping with restaurants, pubs and concession stands. All offering choices never before available on the menu at RFK.

No--at RFK Stadium--High Priced Food, never coincided with High Quality Fare. Hopefully, that will change for the better in 2008.

I can't wait to reminisce with old friends made over the past three years on East Capitol Street. Whether that person is an Usher, A Security Guard, A Team Official, or Our Many Fellow Season Ticket Holder Friends or Fans whom are now acquaintances. The African Queen and I can't wait to see EVERYONE in their own new locations. That's going to be fun.

I can't wait to see My Best Friend!! SCREECH!!, The Racing Presidents, that lovable loser--Teddy, and of course, The NatPack--in their new haunts.

The Sharing of DC Baseball brought us all together. The Love of Our Friends brings us back for each and every subsequent home game.

I can't wait to see BATTING PRACTICE. Home Team Batting Practice--as promised. I can't wait to see both Teams line up along the first and third baselines to be introduced.

I can't wait for that VERY FIRST PITCH--Both of Them.

The Inaugural Ceremonial First Pitch--and it better be The President Of The United States making the toss. As I have stated beforehand--it doesn't matter to me what side of the political aisle that person represents. The Fact remains The Office of President should be honored. Its Baseball Tradition, which all started here in The Nation's Capital. Uniquely qualified is Washington, DC--like NO OTHER AMERICAN CITY--to keep this ritual alive. Only Philadelphia comes close, but Philly finishes a DISTANT SECOND PLACE on this matter--always.

And of course, that Inaugural First Game Pitch at New Nationals Park. Can you imagine THE LIGHT BULBS Flashing if that very first game is a NIGHT GAME? Whoever that very first batter will be--that hitter will well know--there is NO WAY he could possibly see that first pitch of the evening. No way-blinded by every attending fans very own personal camera shot commemorating that moment to come. The Anticipation Great!! The Cheering LOUD!!!

No--I can't wait for that VERY FIRST GAME at New Nationals Park.

I can't wait for the very first BANG!! ZOOM!! Of The Fireworks!!, either.

Nor, can I wait for The Very First Curly "W" at New Nationals Park being placed in the books--and called by Charlie Slowes.

Yes, Winter is nearly upon us. The First Snow has yet to fall. Yet, all I can think about is Our Washington Nationals.

Honestly, I can't wait for winter to end!!

Because, I Can't Wait for Opening Day (or Night)2008 at New Nationals Park on South Capitol Street.

Mission Accomplished

Let's Play Two!! The Grass is completely down at New Nationals Park.

Halfway Home

Dave Jageler is officially back on board as Radio Broadcaster for Our Washington Nationals. You have to figure we are just a few more days away from Charlie Slowes officially returning as well. Slowly, but surely--The Nationals Radio Booth looks to be in good hands again.

Although, its interesting how Bill Ladson buries this news, important to all fans, at the bottom of an Andruw Jones story.

Finally--A Professional Looking Uniform

And, I am talking about The Tampa Bay (Now) Rays--no longer Devil Rays. For 10 Years, not only has this franchise languished in last place, playing in a terrible indoor facility--but their three different uniforms during that era have been just horrible. Purple, Teal, Green, Yellow--all the DISCO Colors. Terrible Stuff.

The just revealed Navy Blue and "Carolina" Blue with that Yellow Sunburst on "Rays" is quite sharp. Maybe now--The Tampa Bay Rays can Officially become a Major League Baseball Team. As, since 1997, they have been nothing short of Minor League.

As many baseball fans can attest--sometimes its all about the uniform. They should have added that Sunburst to their "TB" Cap, too!! Now--that would look SHARP!!

Good for them--nonetheless. Nice effort. Professional looking. Now, I guess MLB will strap Tampa-St.Pete for a new stadium--as a consolation prize.

Odds & Ends Upon Returning Home

Alot of Little News Bits about Our Washington Nationals while I have been out of the country for the past 6 days. So, to catch up--here are a few of my thoughts.

Our Washington Nationals have announced that surgery was successful for Ryan Zimmerman's broken wrist bone.

Here's the entire Press Release:

Ryan Zimmerman had successful surgery performed by Dr. Richard Barth late Wednesday at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC. During the procedure, Zimmerman’s fractured hook of the hammate bone was excised from his left hand without difficulty.

Ryan was discharged shortly after the procedure.

He will be in a splint for approximately one week. Upon removal, he’ll also have sutures removed and almost immediately begin light rehab.

He is expected to fully recover in 4-6 weeks.

But, why does history with Our Washington Nationals tell me that recovery will NOT be that easy. Somehow, someway--I am expecting a setback. Not many times, in three seasons of baseball in DC, has just about ANY Washington player come back from an injury during the initial described dates.

Especially after "Z" tells The Washington Post this injury has bothered him for two years. Really? Come On, even I find that hard to believe and bothersome.

Jose Guillen--suspected Steroid User. Too Bad, from the get go--Jose was always an interesting player for Our Washington Nationals. Injuries and his Head Strong ways led directly to Our Former Number 6 never being 100%, but Guillen was fascinating to watch. Definitely a Diva, and sometimes troublesome--but you could bet Jose Guillen will stand by your side to fight the good fight. Always appreciated.

"Livo" wants to return to Washington. Our Former Baseball Ambassador says only if the money is right. Well, Livan--I don't think you will be offered anything other worldly in salary. But, if you are prepared to really return to The City that was enamored with your Ups & Downs--many would most likely welcome you back--including yours truly--Mi Amigo.

As for the Tommy Glavine rumor--again only if the price is right. Glavine, along with Livan Hernandez could provide some short term Veteran Leadership and Innings Eaters. Both Valuable on a young, ever maturing pitching staff. Nothing wrong with that. Besides--if they are decent pickups--they can be traded again come July, 2008.

No--I would rather not see Andruw Jones. A Great Fielder, maybe one of the best of all time in Centerfield. Our Washington Nationals could spend their money more wisely. Jones most likely would draw too huge of a salary. A contract that might hamper the long term goals of the team. The same with Torii Hunter, another great centerfielder--less of a dynamic hitter.

For some time--Aaron Rowand has always been in my sites. A tough gamer. Rowand fights each and every game, something I appreciate. The youngest of the these three centerfielders--for potential costs, plus return on a winning team. Rowand would be my choice for Centerfield Free Agent Signing--if Our Washington Nationals go in that direction.

Now--about that FanFest which Our Washington Nationals say will take place in Bethesda, Maryland. No doubt--the fact Our Team is having such an event is a HUGE STEP in the right direction. Many Fans will welcome the dates. And yes, Our Team SHOULD BE, a Regional Franchise--its the only way its financial stability will be maintained. But, for the very FIRST Washington Nationals FANFEST--with the opportunity for Nationals Fans from ALL OVER to come meet and greet with potentially many players, coaches and team officials--it should be held in DC proper--at The Convention Center--if such a venue was available. For an Inaugural Event--Our Nation's Capital should be the place. If the team wishes to select alternate sites for upcoming years--so be it. I have no problem with that happening. The More Maryland, and Virginia Fans found the better.

Whether I live and support the team from Alexandria, Virginia or not--should not sway that decision. This team is Our Washington Nationals. They play in The Nation's Capital. Have the First FanFest in DC, if possible--from there on--it doesn't really matter. Fans are going to show up--no matter WHERE IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA the event is held. No Matter Where.

As for The Nationals Dream Foundation Gala at National Harbor across The Potomac in Prince Georges County? Fine. The PG County Hotel is providing Free Digs. The Foundation can provide more funding to their charity. You can't complain about that fact, nor can The District. Let a DC Hotel come up with more generous offer--working with the team for that charity--if The District Government has a problem with the event being held outside the city proper. If the event is for a good cause to help others (DC Folks, by the way)--there should be no complaint--just compliance.

But overall--should The District not be worrying too much about these two events? If DC gets extra cash from Our Washington Nationals for Ticket Sales & Concessions above a certain ceiling--should not The District Government welcome the potential recruiting of more and more baseball fans to New Nationals Park. Its a Win-Win, for everyone--definitely The City. Sometimes--Politicians can't see the Forest, for the Trees.

And finally, Bob Carpenter is back as TV Play-By-Play Man for MASN. A One Year Deal. It will be interesting to see how Carpenter & Don Sutton play out. No, not my favorite announcer--but so be it. Now, more importantly--lets get Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler locked up as well--LONG TERM.

PS--That Baseball Field is LOOKING GREAT!!

Away Again

Again, I am out of the country on business and will not be back until Wednesday--at the earliest. Of course--this will probably be the week Our Washington Nationals send out all the Relocation Information.

Instant Replay

When The General Managers for each and every Major League Baseball Team show up in Orlando, Florida on Monday for their Annual General Managers Meetings--more than the swapping of players, and deals to be made, will be on their minds. For the very first time, Commissioner Bud Selig has stated he will listen, seriously, to each and every GM--and give them a determining vote in whether MLB will accept Television Instant Replay during the upcoming Major League Baseball Season--for every single game. Throughout the over 145 Years of Professional Baseball, the overturning of any umpire's decision, by anyone, for any reason--has been nothing short of blasphemy. The Men In Blue have always been given THE FINAL SAY. The Arbiters of Baseball hold the keys to their very own decisions. No appeal can ever be overturned by ANYONE ELSE. Any Umpiring Crew is their very own Supreme Court. Only their group of four can make a ruling. Only that crew--can overrule themselves.

For a very long time--I have held those beliefs close to my chest, also. Besides, any intense confrontation between Umpire, Manager or even Player--can sometimes be The Highlight of any Ballgame. Growing up, the sight of The Baltimore Orioles Manager Early Weaver taking it out on ANY UMPIRE--a sight to behold. Earl understood the theatrics. Weaver knew he most likely would not win--but at least he could turn ANY CROWD to his favor. What a performer that man was--absolutely TERRIFIC!!

History has proven though, far more times than not--that Instant Replay affirms Major League Umpires are pretty good at their jobs. No doubt--most all of them--professional and talented. Yet now and despite that fact, I am ready for change. Because still--there have been too many good examples of Major League Games, both during the Regular Season, the Playoffs, and World Series--where an Umpire's incorrect call has changed the outcome decisively. And, this has nothing to do with balls and strikes--as there is NO WAY--that determination should be given to any video replay official. Sometimes, you just have to respect the insta-second call by The Home Plate Umpire on any pitch.

But, calls in the field, catches or not, foul or fair, safe or out--running inside or outside the baseline--whether or not that phantom tag at second base was too leisurely. Those are situations that should be considered under a new Instant Replay Rule. Like in football--there would have to be some rules to govern the use. As, if any Manager could protest every call--the now 3 Hour Game--would easily reach 4, and possibly 5 hours long. No one--would want to see that.

Instant Replay is a KEY ISSUE. A Technology well adapted in not only The National Football League, but also The National Basketball Association and The National Hockey League. All using video under their own guidelines and circumstances. That's fine with me. And now is the time for Major League Baseball to move ahead with Instant Replay of their own, on Controversial or Unsure Calls on the Baseball Diamond. At the end the day--EVERYONE can accept the right call. No one can accept going home feeling cheated by the wrong call--if that feeling could have been avoided, simply, by a video replay.

We live in the 21st Century of ever evolving Digital Technology. Useful devices are at hand each and every day for EVERYONE. It's time for The Owners of Major League and The Commissioner of Baseball to get their heads out of sand--and moving forward. Quit trying to protect the All Mighty Position Of Umpires--these Baseball Arbiters are human too. They make mistakes too--just like you and me. They shouldn't be embarrassed, if any of their calls are overturned.

The Time, The Technology and The Temperature are all ripe for change. Come the end of next week, when The General Manager's Meetings conclude--Major League Baseball should be moving forward with the implementing of Instant Replay in Professional Baseball.

Nothing short of that decision--will be considered progress.

Of course--Umpire Baiting might take a little more of a backseat to the game with Instant Replay. That aspect, I would probably miss--just a little bit--as everyone loves a good fight.

But, Everyone wants to see the Correct Call--Too (Ryan Zimmerman was called OUT at the plate on this play against The Phillies on August 29th, 2006--a momentum changer in an eventual 5-1 loss to Philadelphia).

It Simply Bothers Me

The Owner of The Seattle Supersonics announces that if The City of Seattle DOES NOT cave in and give him EVERYTHING FOR FREE!!--A New Arena--he's moving his National Basketball Association Team to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Steve Boros, the self proclaimed Super Agent to Professional Sports Stars, is asking $30 Million per season--minimum--for a long term deal for, his man, Alex Rodriguez.

Which all makes me wonder why fans, like me, care so much about OUR HOME TEAMS. Yeah, I know, that's coming from ME. It's all a game. A MONEY GAME. Everyone seemingly is out for themselves, which makes me ponder, at times, whether it's worth all the effort. Truly, it disturbs me. Certainly not a surprise, but it's a wonder, sometimes, why anyone supports professional teams. For years, I LOVED The Washington Redskins. But, Current Owner Daniel Snyder and his Hot Dogging and Forever POSING Football Players have drastically curtailed my enjoyment of The Redskins. The same holds true for The Wizards and The NBA. Never will I enjoy ANY PLAYER making a Slam Dunk--then preening for the cameras--while their opponent runs down the court and scores a quick two. Fortunately, in baseball--if you start hot dogging or preening--that very next pitch is coming right at your head. That's a good thing. But, sometimes, you just have to play the game. Sometimes, the game is not about YOU!! Or, Ownership.

The City of Seattle has given their all to The Supersonics. For 40 Years, that fine city in the Pacific Northwest has treated their Supersonics as their very own lifeblood. Seattle is fine sports town. There is NO EXCUSE for their current owner, Clay Bennett--to gouge that city for every last penny. And, if the city doesn't pay up and give in--move The Supersonics--to a far lesser venue. OKC is not SEA.

You know, I understand sports economics and the all mighty dollar. Money talks, in not only America, but throughout this world. And, I understand that Alex Rodriguez was considered a goat by many New Yorkers. A-Rod wanted to get out from The Big Apple silliness. Honestly, how could anyone blame him. New York is way over the top. Yet still, he is GOING TO BE A HALL OF FAME PLAYER--once his illustrious career ends. But, when will ENOUGH money, be ENOUGH!! Really, how badly does he need all that doe. How badly do REAL FANS, like me, need to suppress their most intermost contempt. I am paying for those Professional Sports Wages. I am sucking it up and paying my hard earned wages so some players can take advantage of my devotion. Negotiating, for what you most deserve is OK with me. Going for the jugular, is not.

I full well know, these types of money grabs are not going to go away during my lifetime. Still, that doesn't make it right. I enjoy sport. Baseball, I love--The Greatest of Games. And, I am devoted to Our Washington Nationals. But, it simply bothers me when GREED takes precedent over EVERYTHING ELSE. Unfortunately, The Mainstream Media hypes it up these day. None more so than ESPN--by coddling many superstars and their agents. Because, If they don't--those media types will never get that next meaningless fluff interview, or access.

When Our Washington Nationals lease is up at New Nationals Park in 2038--my personal adoration might not keep them here. And, Our Team's Greatest Player--whomever that turns out to be--might well ask for $30, $40 or $50 Million per season as well. Believe it or not, his asking price might not keep him here also.

In 1971, I lost My Washington Senators over MONEY. I don't want to lose My Love of The Game AND Our Washington Nationals over Money, and GREED--as well.

Sometimes, Management and Personnel--simply don't get it. They just ALL need to understand--IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT THEM SOMETIMES. Sometimes, it's about The Fans. That's not being idealistic--That's being realistic, and honest.

And All That--Simply Bothers Me.

New Gamer Field Jacket

Last month, Team President Stan Kasten told me there would be only a few minor changes to the 2008 Official Uniform and Gear Assortment for Our Washington Nationals. A change to the Batting Practice Cap and Jersey, along with a Special New Nationals Park Patch to be worn on all Game Jerseys. His only other noted difference, for 2008, was the In Game Worn Fleece Jacket--now available at nationals.com

A slight difference, in style, from the original worn the first three years of Nationals baseball. Toned down Gold Trim, A Curly "W" on the left upper sleeve, instead of the "DC" lettering down near the left wrist on the first version. And, less blue additions all around the Red Home Jacket. At least in these pictures, a lighter shade of blue is shown, as well. Now--just three blue stripes that encircle both sleeves at the elbows and the neck cuff.

The Description for the 2008 Model says this new jacket is not only WATERPROOF, but has moisture wicking technology to keep wetness and perspiration away from your body.

Not an overall big difference. Being use to the Original Version--I still like its styling better. A little more pizazz, at least to me. The Performance of the new version most likely better though. Of course--the gold trim has been an addition which I personally enjoy. Although, others have tended not to like the gold.

The Final Words With Matt Haas

To review, last Friday, Matt Haas--Project Executive for Clark Construction--was kind enough to sit down with Sohna and I to go over the Construction Schedule for New Nationals Park. Today, is the conclusion of that interview.

Here we go.

How about those Cherry Trees—is that going to happen? (SBF)

“Yes, we got 8 going into the centerfield area between the garages. Then, we got six additional that The Nationals are paying for next to the centerfield restaurant. Those Cherry Trees are tagged and in a nursery in New Jersey. We are going to plant them. I can’t really say if they are going to bloom at the right time. It all depends on the whim of the weather.”

You are aware of the efforts to put three Statues of former Washington Baseball Greats in this ballpark. And, the painting of pictures of former Washington Players on the Columns along the concourse. Are you directly involved in any of that? (SBF)

"No, The Arts & Humanities Commission has provided an outside funding source for the statues. They will be placed in The Main Entry Plaza, I believe. And, The Nationals have hired an interior decorator to work on those paintings and other interior designs to help spruce up the park. But, we are not involved directly in those actions."

If the retail area we are sitting in right now will now be ready come Opening Day, will the Nationals Office Building being built adjacent to the ballpark be ready? (SBF)

“Yes, it will be ready. (Really, Mr. Kasten told me if the team didn’t move into the offices until mid-season that would be all right with him. It was the least of his worries. SBF). Well, that would be up to him when he wants to move in. But, we plan to be ready unless something changes drastically. We will be ready for team. If they want to move in later—that's their prerogative.”

Are there any other spots in the stadium that might not be ready on Opening Day? (SBF)

“We are planning to have the entire ballpark ready--which is everything except that retail space. That being said, there is possibility that certain areas—for example: a concession. There might be a problem with a concession, where something could come up. In that case, we would try to isolate it and not have it open. But, our goal is to have everything ready by Opening Day.”

“We will be Baseball Ready by Opening Day. That’s what we owe by contract. To us, that essentially means fans can come in, watch a baseball game, safely. They can buy a hotdog and a beer, or a soda. They can use the facilities, buy tickets, souvenirs—and that, is baseball ready.”

At one time, there was talk of putting some type of large baseball on top of the Centerfield Restaurant with a 3D Display. Is that still in the works? (SBF)

“I have heard rumors, but nothing we are formally, or informally involved with.”

The HDTV Frame is up, the Nationals Logos are in place on it. How soon will the HDTV Screen be completed? (SBF)

“It goes in LED Panel by LED Panel. We are putting it in place right now. They are going in right now. Soon, it will be ready.”

Are there any other HDTV Screens to be placed in the outfield walls? That was mentioned as a possibility by the team, previously? (SBF)

“No, not that I know of.”

How far along are the team clubhouses and suites? (SBF)

“The Home Team Clubhouse is well along. The Lockers are going in. We are a couple of weeks away from putting carpet in. We are still finishing up tile in the showers. The Hydro Therapy Pools are in. The glass for all the suites is arriving right now. That arrival will allow us to start finishing off all the appointments. The Millwork (The Cabinets) all arrives this coming week. Most of the suites are prime painted already. The Suites will not be any issue in completing.”

How about The Press Box? (SBF)

“Also, moving along nicely. The Glass Sliders for them arrived yesterday (last Thursday, October 25th). The Press Box is all framed out. The platforms are there. The View up there is pretty stunning. The best views in the entire ballpark. The Press Box is in great shape.

When Centerplate actually tries to get their concessions up and running—will that get into the way of your construction? (SBF)

“It could, but we are going to have to work closely with anybody that needs to get in here. We must coordinate deliveries. But, its not too much difference than any other construction job—whether it’s an office building or a stadium. But, our goal is to get those areas done (needed by Centerplate) and hand over the keys to them, so they can do get their work completed.”

“What we have been fortunate with is dry weather. Good weather has allowed our crews to continue on pace to complete this project on time.”

Final question. All fans really care about is come here on Opening Day. And, when they come in here—everything they want to see will be up and ready to go. Whether that’s buy a hot dog; sit in their seat to enjoy the baseball game; look at the view. That will all be available to them--correct? (SBF)

“All of those things will be available.”

You are confident? (SBF)

“Yes, I am confident.”

With that, My Conversation with Matt Haas concludes. What was fascinating about seeing New Nationals Park last week was--not only how far along the stadium has come--but how much more needs to be completed. From our novice construction eyes, there is still alot to be done. The basics all appear to be in place. And, It's time to start filling in the blanks. 5 Month seems like enough time to finish off this project. Although, I just hope they don't come across any major delays. That would be a setback.

My Conversation With Matt Haas

For 11 years--Matt Haas has worked for Clark Construction in various capacities. Today--he is in charge of the biggest project of his Professional Career. As Project Executive--Matt, along with Clark Construction Vice President Ronnie Strompf (who has twice been interviewed on Nats320), are personally in charge of completing the $611 Million Dollar New Nationals Ballpark on South Capitol Street. A 23 Month Project--that everyone involved will state--WITHOUT A DOUBT--is one of most challenging construction jobs--based on time, budget and political restraints--both will most likely ever be involved.

Now, with November upon us--The Home Stretch of this most difficult of tasks is at hand. This very week, the construction site moved from a 12 Hour Work Day to an 18 Hour Work Day (6AM to 12 Midnight). All because, just a short five months from now--Our Washington Nationals are scheduled to play their very first game at New Nationals Park. As noted yesterday--The African Queen and I were provided the opportunity to update The Nats320 ongoing Photo Essay of The New Stadium. At the same--thanks to Chrystal Stowe from Smoot Construction, Matt Haas was kind enough to meet with us, to discuss progress on the ballpark. This chat will be a two parter. First up--the overall construction and timing of the project.

Sohna, Matt and I met at Clark's Construction Office--Official Address--24 Potomac Avenue, SE. This site is what will eventually become The Retail Space--running alongside the first base side--attached to New Nationals Park--as part of the long range planned Boulevard of The Ballpark District. The time was 1PM, Friday--October 26th, 2007.

With that--lets begin My Conversation with Matt Haas.

Here we go.

As far as construction is right now—how far along is the process? (SBF)

“If you do it in terms of time, this is a 23 month project, and we have five months left until Opening Day--then I would say we are 75% complete.”

What issues might still be standing in the way of not meeting that goal? (SBF)

“There are no foreseeable issues. Obviously, something could come up as in any construction project. But, right now, we have a pretty clear vision and path to get to the end.”

Is there any margin for error, right now? (SBF)

“No, not much. Not much—no. Never was and never will be (smiling-both of us laughing). This will be a race to the very end.”

Some little thing could go wrong and you would be all right. But, if anything major happens—it could be a problem? (SBF)

“Yeah, we are prepared for the little things. Little things come up every single day—literally. But, no—if something major came up—it would be an issue.”

What would be a major issue that might come up? (SBF)

“Anything catastrophic, we don’t even think about that stuff—any type of natural disaster. But, some of the lower tier things would include labor shortages, material deliveries, and real harsh weather. Those would be things, some of which we would be in a position to overcome. If it got to a point where it became a major issue—we would have to do something to overcome the problem. Yes, it could jeopardize getting it (The Stadium) done, but we would find a way around it. That, I am confident.”

Is major construction out of the way right now? Are you just filling in the pieces? (SBF)

“No, there is still a lot of major work construction to do. When you look around the stadium—it appears the major construction is done because the structure is there. We are still finishing up things like concrete; the field will go in, in about another week—the actual turf. But, the major things that you don’t see and the average person doesn’t see, is the thousands and thousands of miles of cabling that is throughout the service level, which runs up to the scoreboard control room and then goes down to the scoreboard. And, all the different telecom closets throughout the facility, the electrical drops and rooms. That’s the real guts of this project—the electrical. Some people don’t call that major construction, but it really is. Our biggest challenge is getting all the systems up and running.”

“So, when that fan comes in here on that first day, and wants to get a beer--the beer system and beer conduit down to all the cooler rooms work. Or, if a fan wants to watch replays on the scoreboard—a flip of the switch—and it will work. Those are the major things that still need to be finished.”

There were some conversations online concerning that Press Box Camera now looking down from on top of the stadium—which is quite cool—and eerie at night (Matt—yes, it is—I know what you are talking about). But, some have commented that, from their eye, looking at that picture—it does not appear to them there is anyway the ballpark can be completed on time. While others, seeing the same picture—see no way you cannot make Opening Day. So, where is it? Who is right? (SBF)

“We are going to make it. Everybody is aligned to get there. Everyone has the same goal—obviously. And, we are going to get there. If you look at that (Press Box) Camera, there is nothing that scares me. The field is going in; when we said it was going in—which is the first part of November. We got 1820 seats in this week. We have said if we can get 1800 consistently per week—that would be no problem. No, we are in good shape.” (Nearly 20,000 seats are currently completed)

Does anything scare you when it comes to completing the project? (SBF)

“Yeah, like how many millions of dollars we still have to put into place. Its going to average out to over $1.2 Million Dollars of work needs to go into place each day, on site, to the end. And, that’s just a lot of people. We are hovering around 800 workers per day. I see that number getting closer to 1000 workers per day. Making sure everyone is heading into the same direction—with the same priorities—yeah—that scares me.”

And, yet with that $1.2 Million Dollars spent per day—you can’t go over budget one penny? (SBF—chuckling)

(Laughing) “Yes, because if we do, we are going to go under budget the very next day (everyone chuckling).

“But, seriously, the daily skirmishes and emergencies that arise—we must be able to put out those fires every day. Because, there will come a day in late February or Early March where everyone is dependent on everyone else to do their job.”

So, one trade is dependent on the other trades to be in sync? (SBF)

“Yes, you are exactly right. And, the good thing out here is that every trade is working well together. Having been on several projects in the past—there has always been a few problem subcontractors, but on this site we don’t have that issue. A lot of that success has to do with our site supervisor (Ronnie Strompf—VP Clark Construction) who meets with all the subcontractors every single morning.”

Are you aware and does the possibility of The Washington Nationals moving up Opening Day to March 30—for a special Sunday Night Major League Baseball Opener—conflict with your construction schedule? (SBF)

“Any day lost is of concern to me. So, yes. We overcame a two-month start delay due to the late acquisition of the land, and squeezing any more days out of our schedule will be a struggle."

Is it conceivable that some of the retail space (on Potomac Ave SE—where this interview was conducted) which might be leased space at the new ballpark—might not be ready come Opening Day? (SBF)

“That’s a very safe bet that this retail space will not be open. I expect to probably be sitting right here as the first pitch is thrown (all of us chuckling). Now, I don’t have any real knowledge of the rentals on these spaces—but what I am told—there are not imminent buyers for these spaces, or someone to lease this space. But, that’s more a question for the (DC) Sports and Entertainment Commission.”

Centerplate—which is the new concessionaire, as well as team store and memorabilia sellers—they will most likely not be operating anything out of these retail spaces (on Potomac Avenue, SE)? (SBF)

“Not out of this space.”

Speaking of Centerplate—do you have to deal with them at all right now? (SBF)

“We have had a few coordination meetings. They were brought on pretty late in the game—really late in this process. Normally, Centerplate, Aramark or whoever is the concessionaire is—is brought in much earlier and have a lot more say into the concession design. Here, the design was complete and we have already laid out how the concessions will be. They (Centerplate) will have to adapt to that. And, that’s just a case of The Nationals not getting a deal with them until much later."

They are actually well known for coming in and redesigning stuff after the fact. (SBF)

“After the fact is OK!!’ (Everyone busting out laughing). “After the fact is OK!! But, you talked about things that we could not overcome. At this point, we cannot overcome changes to this project (when it comes to Centerplate, the Nationals or anyone elses needs), little or big. We have a design that is complete. And, for this stadium to open—we have to focus on the base contract work we have, and not get distracted.”

“Now, you could say—‘How could changing the concessions affect the opening of this park?’ But, any little thing—a change in equipment, and that equipment doesn’t arrive on time—and the Department of Health doesn’t get in and give us our occupancy permit for that concession—Centerplate is then delayed in offering that service. That’s why we have our designs done; the city (DC) and The Nationals have had opportunities to review our designs. They (The Nationals) made some changes and we accommodated them early. But, we have reached a point where we need to just focus on getting done the basic approved design.”

At one time, The Nationals said they were going to put “X” Number of dollars into upgrades at the park. Is everything they originally wanted to do—taking place? (SBF)

“Yes, everything The Nationals have wanted to do—we’ve accommodated. There has not been anything they wanted—that cannot be done. Now, there might be future things and now it’s too late. They enhanced the scoreboard (HDTV). They added the bathrooms to the suites. They upgraded the slider systems (Glass) in the suite fronts. They made some changes to the Office Building (attached) with the building layout. And, they enlarged the Centerfield Restaurant—as well. That’s all stuff we accommodated and is in the current designs.”

And, that is all costs, which The Team is paying for, correct? (SBF)

“Yes, all those things I mentioned—The Nationals are paying for. Those are called ‘Team Directed Changes’. The Nationals give a change to the city (DC). And, that's the only way The DC Sports and Entertainment Commission can increase our contract ($611 Million Dollars)--is if they have these ‘Team Directed Changes’--where there is a funding source.”

Just to be sure. You are building this stadium as per the original deal. And, anything The Nationals want to add on now. Or, Centerplate wants to add on now. Must, be done—after this current stadium design is completed? (SBF)

“Unless it’s a cosmetic like change. If they want say pink (laughing) instead of red color. Yes, that’s right. Obviously—we are going to try to be as accommodating as we possibly can. But, their goal is our goal, and I know they would support us if something can’t be done that is going to jeopardize the project opening.”

“Certainly it would be something that could be done after the season started, during an away series or during the All Star Break, or the next year—that would be the smart thing to do.”

New Nationals Park Photo Tour Update

Yes, its true--nearly just five months to go before Our Washington Nationals play their very first baseball game on South Capitol Street. With that in mind--I contacted Chrystal Stowe from Smoot Construction and she was kind enough to not only set up an update tour for The Nats320 Blog--but also a sitdown interview with Matt Haas--Project Executive for Clark Construction. Matt, along with Clark Vice President Ronnie Strompf are in charge of each and every detail of New Nationals Park. Last Friday, October 26th--Sohna and I not only met with Matt at 1pm, but also took an update picture tour of the Stadium Site. If you recall--last Friday afternoon witnessed some torrential rainstorms in the Washington, DC Area. Just awful. But, despite all that, The African Queen and I trudged out to the ballpark and completed the task at hand. No, it was not the most ideal picture conditions. Yet, at the same time--we were not going to pass up on the opportunity.

First up will be The Photo Tour. Then, to follow in the next few days--Our Interview with Matt Haas. But, I wanted to pass along--although the date is not locked in--we were told that November 5th or November 6th is the target date for beginning the grass laying of the baseball surface at New Nationals Park. A Key Milestone in the Construction Process. No doubt--a Major Photo Opportunity for Our Washington Nationals.

So, with that out of the way--here is Our Photo Tour of New Nationals Park from Friday, October 26th, 2007.

Sohna and I got a kick out of the fact that we can now actually walk around the entire ballpark--concourses, mezzanine, press box, even the lower access tunnels and team locker rooms--without getting lost. Even the Construction Teams from Smoot/Clark/Hunt were surprised at our knowledge of the ballpark and why certain things are being constructed in such a way. Also, it was nice to know that this ballpark is quite intimate. As--it only takes a few minutes to move from one part of New Nationals Park to far extreme on the other side. This Ballpark is COMPACT--Far easier to move around than RFK Stadium.

Up Next--Our Interview with Matt Haas from Clark Construction.
