No Excuse!! NONE!!

When you have rallied back from behind, in the 9th inning to take the lead, have two outs against your opponent and their batter is down to his last strike--there is LITTLE EXCUSE FOR ERROR!! Jimmy Rollins was at the plate for Philadelphia, two outs, two strikes and he lofts a routine, but long fly to left centerfield. Ryan Church had the ball in his glove, but Ryan Langerhans interceded, getting in the way.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN WE WITNESS OUR PLAYERS NOT CALL THE BALL!! This has been a problem all season long!! Really, its not as difficult as it seems. Its certainly not as written off as "difficult" by some announcers. Am I ever tired of that cover story. Sometimes you have to place blame. Quite Frankly, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR WHAT HAPPENED TONIGHT.

No Excuse that, with the GAME's FINAL OUT Right in front of them--My Main Man!! Ryan Church and Ryan Langerhans could not figure out who catches that fly ball. No Excuse that Church short hopped a throw to Felipe Lopez after dropping the ball. No excuse, that Rollins--seeing FLop lazily move toward Church's throw, and the comedy of errors playing out in front of him--ran hard around third--knowing this was his chance to score the tying run. Only to see FLop finally pick up the baseball and SHORTHOP a throw to Brian Schneider at the plate. No EXCUSE for that TERRIBLE THROW that should have thrown out Rollins at the plate--by a MILE!!! A toss that Schneider could not handle. A scored triple and error that tied this game, and eventually handed Our Washington Nationals an AWFUL 7-5 Loss in 14 innings. Yes, Ryan Howard beat us again with a two run shot off Chris Booker, his 13th career Home Run against Washington.

As happy as I was, expectantly, with a marvelous comeback by Washington in the top of the 9th--devastated I became when Our Washington Nationals just flat out blew it in the bottom of the 9th!! This loss had nothing to do with being out manned. It had nothing to do with being outgunned. This loss had EVERYTHING TO DO WITH NOT BEING COMPETENT--WITH THE GAME ON THE LINE!!

Just an unacceptable loss. How many times have we witnessed in Section 320, time and time again--our players not CALLING FOR THE BALL!! Its a basic concept and skill of the game. Every Single Person who has ever played this great game should understand that. I don't care if you are an outfielder or pitcher--you should be able to properly call the ball and catch it.

There is NO EXCUSE FOR WHAT HAPPENED TONIGHT at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

NONE!!

JUST AN AWFUL LOSS!! I don't care if we are a last place team or not. This one HURTS--BADLY!!!

And, to think--just moments earlier, I was about to post this:

This was remarkable! Down 4-2 entering the top of the 9th inning against The Philadelphia Phillies, even I did not expect a comeback. Yet, as Our Washington Nationals have proven, time and time again, this 2007 season--they may be outgunned, but definitely not outmanned. Really, who had Our Team to come from behind in the final inning to win? And, in such an unusual way?

Clutch hitting from Tony Batista. Now, how many of you, including me, were screaming at your television--"NOT TONY??!!" when Our Manager sent Batista to the plate to pinch hit? Didn't Number 77 Prove us wrong. And finally, Jesus Flores--Our Terrific Rule V Draftee--provided his finest hit in the clutch with the game on the line to put Our Washington Nationals in the lead.

All we needed now was "The Most Thrilling Closer In The Game" to finish it off. Chad Cordero, in the spirit of the rally, shutdown the home team tonight. Shutting up Citizens Bank Park and sending many of those Phillie Faithful home in an extremely disgruntled mood. Of course, this was really a 5-4 UNEXPECTED VICTORY--possibly one of the finest of this season. Now many times have Our Washington Nationals played just well enough to lose. This evening in South Philadelphia--Our Team showed some serious moxie.

That sounded pretty good, didn't it? As it turned out, that was all fantasy. Our Washington Nationals were dreaming. Unthinking in their effort during the fatal ninth, and distracted with the game on the line. I know, this is pretty harsh from me, But Our Washington Nationals Deserve it tonight. Possibly, the worst loss of 2007. There is NO EXCUSE FOR CHURCH AND LANGERHANS in the 9th. NONE!!

Just a TERRIBLE LOSS!!

A defeat that included Our Manager Manny Acta running out of position players. An unexpected thrashing that just has to hurt Manny where it counts this most--his gut. Do I ever feel sorry for Manny tonight.

Baseball is the most Exceptional Game. Tonight, The Great Game showed how wrenching an adventure any of its battles can be. For some time, I will not be able to forget this one. Honestly, I doubt if I will be able to sleep tonight.

Do you think Manny will?

Celebrating Cal, Jr.

As well detailed in The Nats320 Blog, Former Slugger Frank Howard is My Favorite Player of All Time. In fact, "HONDO" was and will always be My IDOL. But, Cal Ripken, Jr. is The Most Beloved Player of My Adult Life. As fine of a player as he was on the field--he was even GREATER off of it. That's What Makes Cal, Jr. So Special. There has been no better ROLE MODEL for fans to follow and adore then Cal Ripken, Jr.--NONE. No One Is Close.

Not one single player over the past Quarter Century is more appreciated than Baltimore's Number 8. Many have said, Ripken saved Baseball in the Mid-90's, when he passed one of baseball's most cherished records--Lou Gehrig's Consecutive Games Streak of 2130. One Year after an Owner Lockout that could have KILLED THE GREAT GAME. And, at a time many baseball players ignored their fans--Cal Ripken, Jr stood on the side of the field and signed autographs for ANYONE THAT WANTED A BRIEF MOMENT WITH HIM.

That's Class--that's understanding your roots. And proves, that Baltimore's FINEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME is well grounded in, not only the skills of baseball, but more importantly, but the aptitude of life. I hold Cal Ripken, Jr in HIGH ESTEEM. Not many have struck me in such a way.

For some time now--I wanted to attend Cal Ripken's Official Sendoff to his Hall of Fame Induction in Cooperstown this weekend. The African Queen and I were well aware that Tuesday Night, July 24th, The Baltimore Orioles were going to have a special celebration. Badly, I wanted to go. But, when you work on a Network Television Newscast that ends at 6PM EDT--you can bet there was LITTLE CHANCE of making the event.

Then again--sometimes you get lucky.

Out of nowhere, My Washington Bureau Chief decided to cover Cal's Sendoff at Camden Yards Tonight. Quickly, arrangements were made. Thankfully, The Baltimore Orioles Media Relations Staff were very accommodating. And, was it EVER WORTHWHILE.

Cal Ripken, Jr and his lovely Wife, Kelly were just terrific--Self Deprecating in their Media Interviews--pleasant and fun. When it comes to Life--both get it. Always introspective of the fortunate turns in their lives. And, well versed in the parenting of two, now well rounded teenagers--Rachel & Ryan. Both kids now "realizing for the very first time"--the importance of their beloved Father. Cal talked about this at length tonight in The Press Conference.

Honestly, I was proud to be able to attend. And, when Earl Weaver, Brooks Robinson, Robin Roberts and Eddie Murray (Four of Baltimore's GREATEST--All Hall of Famers) were kind enough to speak with us for our story--My Correspondent and I really understood HOW MUCH CAL RIPKEN, JR. IS LOVED--AS A PERSON.

Tuesday Night, July 24th was a SPECIAL NIGHT. Appreciative I was to attend. Briefly, I got the distinctive opportunity to speak with Cal and his Wife, Kelly--and meet 4 additional Hall of Famers.

Yeah, I know--Our Washington Nationals played tonight in Philadelphia and lost, 4-3. But, for one night, THIS NIGHT--It was FAR MORE IMPORTANT to Celebrate A MOST BELOVED PLAYER--Cal Ripken, Jr. I could never say enough good things about him--too many adjectives describe him.

Simply--Cal Ripken, Jr Understands Life. Number 8 is a Winner Forever!!

Congratulations Cal!! for your Induction into The Baseball Hall of Fame. No One is More Deserving.

PS--While leaning against the railing at the top of The Orioles Dugout--waiting for our interview opportunities--tonight's opponent--Tampa Bay was emerging from The Baltimore (Yes, that's right Orioles) Dugout. There was no ON FIELD Batting Practice due to the Celebration--so The Devil Rays were hitting under the first base stands in The Orioles Batting Cages. As I turned to watch them walk up and onto the field--I found myself face to face with Former Nationals Josh Wilson and Brendan Harris. Wilson looked straight at me, and stopped. "I know you?" he questioned. I responded "Yes, I talked with you and Michael Restovich last February during the first week of Nats Spring Training and wrote about it." Josh knowingly smiled: "Yes, you were the blogger that did all the coverage that week." Boy, was I ever STUNNED he remembered. Josh Wilson went on to introduce me to Brendan Harris--and I had to explain to them--Television News is my occupation. The Nats320 Blog is my hobby.

They both laughed--"Now I understand a little better," Wilson exclaimed. That was the gist of the encounter--but as they were about to continue on their way back to the third base dugout, I asked: "How do you two compare Tampa Bay to Washington?" Both responded, almost in unison: "Its an opportunity. We are getting a chance to play. That's all we ever wanted." With that, Josh Wilson and Brendon Harris went on their way. Leaving me chuckling over it all. One of those little unexpected moments, I will always remember.

And NO!! I did not wear a Nationals Cap to Camden Yards. There was too much respect to be shown there this evening.

Tomorrow--I promise to return to writing about Our Washington Nationals. There was just no way I was passing on Cal Ripken, Jr. tonight. NO WAY!!

Finally, The 2131 Cal Ripken Bobblehead given to 25,000 Fans & The Media is pretty good too!!

Why He's Wanted Now

In many respects, he was The Last Man Standing. Ronnie Belliard was the Starting Second Baseman for The 2006 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. And, NOBODY WANTED HIM. A decent, if unspectacular player growing up in The Majors as a Milwaukee Brewer--Belliard became an All Star in 2004 with The Cleveland Indians. A dependable fielder, clutch hitter--and well liked by all his teammates.

When The Indians decided to reload for the future--Ronnie became expendable. Cleveland was going with many of their talented youngsters--The Cardinals were looking to win The Championship. Having never played in any Playoff or World Series Game in his entire career---Ronnie Belliard got his greatest wish. He was traded to St. Louis. And, he WON IT ALL, wearing that GORGEOUS RED, WHITE & GOLD of The Cardinals.

Ronnie Belliard had reached The Promised Land.

At a time he was, most likely living--The Happiest Baseball Moments of his Life--he was not resigned by St. Louis. Told to go shopping. Find a job on your own. November passed, then December--followed by January. Three Full Months--No One Called. Not One Single Major League Team wanted Ronnie Belliard.

With Spring Training already underway, Our Washington Nationals finally came calling. No Team in Baseball had an All-Comers Meet, like Our Team, this past February & March. Our General Manager Jim Bowden played Ronnie's Savior--and on February 18--signed Belliard to a one year, $850,000 contract. No strings attached. If Ronnie was going to continue earning a living playing Major League Baseball--he would have to resurrect his career in Washington.

That VERY FIRST DAY of Training Camp for him--in Viera, Florida--I just so happened to run into Ronnie--moments before he took the field. Kind enough to speak to me--you could tell he was a little disgruntled with the business aspects of the game. But, once he crossed that threshold--walkway to playing field--his personality turned to that of fun loving child. Greeted by many of his new teammates, Ronnie Belliard was back in his comfort zone--again playing baseball. Once more, playing the game he loves.

He didn't stop there. From the very first game of 2007--Belliard has been extremely dependable. Whether playing any of the four infield positions--Ronnie has stepped onto the field and contributed. Our Number 10 making many wonder--exactly what did SO MANY OTHER TEAMS NOT SEE IN HIS TALENTS? He can hit, field, run--and PIVOT at Second Base on a Double Play, as well as, any player in the game. Yeah, he's not the best looking athlete. But, He's a BALLPLAYER!!

A Ballplayer competing on a team filled with talent given a Second (Sometimes Third) Chance. That fact, the nature of Our 2007 Washington Nationals. While Dimitri Young became Our Most Valuable Player, Ronnie Belliard became Our Most Versatile. A spot starter, top bench player--and when Cristian Guzman went down for the season with a freak hand injury--Our Number 10 picked up his game. Belliard having been thrown a lifeline to sustain his career--Ronnie is now helping to resuscitate a young, ever evolving Franchise. Today, he was warmly welcomed into the fold. And, I couldn't be happier. Our Number 10, one of many points on July 15th, I wished Our Washington Nationals to address throughout the remainder of the 2007 season.

Our Washington Nationals re-signed Ronnie Belliard to a two year contract extension Monday Afternoon. 2 Years--$3.5 Million the reported sum. In today's world of ever escalating Baseball Salaries--Our Washington Nationals might well have made a steal. Yeah, "The BallPlayer" as I have so fondly come to call him--may well be More Valuable than ever now. He can still play his game, be a positive influence on Our Young Players, and help Our Washington Nationals become, not only a competitive team--but a Winning Team. Veteran Leadership on Younger Emerging Squads--Invaluable.

And, make no mistake about it. Ronnie Belliard will be JUST AS VALUABLE as a Trading Commodity--for the remainder of this year, next year & the year that follows. Everyone knows where he stands, now. Every single Major League Team that may be interested in his varying talents--will not worry that he will walk on them--at least until 2009.

By Signing on the dotted line on July 23rd, 2007--Ronnie Belliard is not only a respected, bonafide Major League Player again--but a sought after one. Our Number 10 can help Our Washington Nationals Now, Later--and Even in The Future.

How Can That Possibly Be Bad?

Our General Manager Jim Bowden deserves some credit for this move. The African Queen THRILLED that Ronnie Belliard is a Washington National--for the foreseeable future. A Player that NO ONE WANTED--now signed to a Two Year Contract Extension.

Really, Its a Good Day--to be a Fan of Our Washington Nationals.

Five Minutes With Ronnie Belliard

HUGE UPDATE!! Many Thanks to Nats320 Regular Reader/Commenter/Visitor Jim for first handing me this GREAT INFORMATION!! The Washington Post is reporting Ronnie Belliard as RE-SIGNED with Our Washington Nationals for Two Years. Now, Ronnie comments to me about his future in this post explains his guarded response to my question.

Last Thursday, July 19th--Our Washington Nationals Ronnie Belliard was the Guest of Honor during the monthly get together at THE ESPN ZONE in Downtown Washington, DC. As usual, Washington Play-By-Play Radio Broadcaster Charlie Slowes hosted the event. A Lunch Time crowd that swelled to a couple hundred fans. This "Meet & Greet" was extremely well attended. No one has ever recorded the actual attendance figures over the first three seasons of Nationals Baseball, and these autograph sessions at ESPN ZONE. But most Nationals employees on hand felt, this was by far--the largest turnout to date.

There were some very good questions from the many gathered fans. And, Ronnie Belliard was quite engaging--sitting on The Dias as Charlie Slowes worked the room gathering every one's interest. Michael Phillips from MLB.com was there and posted up some of the answers to the many fan questions. What was quite revealing, and funny at the same time--was Belliard's response about whether he uses Ash or Maple Bats? Ronnie started laughing and told everyone that he uses Albert Pujols' personal bats. The St. Louis Cardinals Slugger and Belliard are good friends. When Ronnie was struggling early this season, Pujols sent him a few of his bats. Our Number 10 started to use them--and has never turned back. 'Send me some MORE!--I told him on the phone.' "He's my supplier now!!" Belliard shouted out. (EVERYONE BUSTED OUT LAUGHING) And those bats--they are Ash.

Someone joked maybe this would explain Albert Pujols sub par season so far in 2007. Could Albert be using Ronnie Belliard's Bats? (More Laughs--Charlie Slowes loved the comment--Ronnie just dipped his head and chuckled)

Then, as the Lunch Hour moved past the halfway point, everyone lined up to get an autograph, and take pictures with Ronnie Belliard. Once again, Our Washington Nationals provided a free gift for each and every attendee. This time, Red "DC" Nats Visors. The identical ones given out by GEICO during a previous RFK Stadium Promotion. Many used the visor for their autograph from Belliard.

Finally, despite the large turnout, the signing of many autographs and Ronnie needing to head off for RFK Stadium to prepare for that night's game--he was kind enough to give me 5 minutes of his time--answering questions for The Nats320 Blog.

Here we go:

I have said many times that your swing mimics Manny Ramirez (Boston Red Sox Star Slugger)—Why? (SBF)

“I always try to do the things the good hitters do. I have always idolized him. Many times I have asked him (Manny Ramirez) many questions, when I was in the American League. ‘How do you do this? How do you do that?’ I wasn’t seeing the light at first in the Big Leagues. But, after speaking with Manny, things changed for me. I loved how he always got hits. His swing IS SO BEAUTIFUL! So, I have tried to take what he’s done and work it into my game.”

We talked about this the other day in Section 320—how well you extend your swing through the strike zone. Is that because of Manny Ramirez? (SBF)

“Maybe, maybe. Because my swing was somewhat like that, throughout the Minors. I was an inside out hitter. So, as that type of hitter, you must follow through on the ball with your swing. But, I think when I got older, my swing improved and it did coincide with seeing him (Ramirez) hit. I don’t know, for sure. But, he’s My Idol, as a hitter. No doubt, for me, he’s MY IDOL. That man knows how to hit!!”

How is it that you came to play short rightfield, at times, while playing second base? It seems to work for you. And, you don’t appear to be caught out of position, like many might believe? (SBF)

“When I came up as a Brewer, they (Milwaukee) never let me play like that. They said: ‘We don’t want you to play like that.’ But, really, they (The Brewers) were just not familiar with how it works for me. But, when I went to Colorado, they (The Rockies) let me play in the grass. Although, not all the time. Then, I went to Cleveland. One day, someone was hitting in an exhibition game (Belliard playing second base). I was playing into the grass and made a nice catch. They (Cleveland) responded: ‘Man, that’s good--can you do that in a real game all the time.’ I said: ‘Yeah, If you let me.’ The Indians told me to play wherever I wanted. So, I decided to play like that. Interesting, I see a lot of other guys (players) doing it now. It gives me far greater range.”

Yet, it doesn’t seem to effect you coming in on grounders on the infield grass? (SBF)

"Yeah, that’s true, but I have to be smart. If I am to play that way, I can only really do it on the 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th hitters. Or, guys that don’t run well. The leadoff guy, you just can’t do it. That hitter is going to take advantage of me by bunting or hitting a high chopper. Next thing you know, a man is on first base.”

Your pivot at second base is terrific, even with an opposing playing sliding right into your legs, you stand tall and, most always, get the throw off. Is it talent, or more guile? (SBF)

“Oh, I don’t know. I just turn them. Part of the game is being tough. You have to be fearless, take the chance. If not, you get beat. And, someone else will get that job.”

You are really good at it (Pivoting at Second).(SBF)

“Thank you, I appreciate that comment.”

During the Q & A Session with Fans, Ronnie took my following question:

Question: After spending all winter without a team, is there a redemption factor now that you are hitting so well?

Belliard: After I won the World Series, I thought, "Hey, I'm going to play for somebody." But then nobody called me. Then the Nationals called, and I thought, "Manny [Acta] is there, there are Dominican guys there; I'll come and help the team win games."

So, to follow up: Is Manny really the sole reason way you came here? (SBF)

"He's not the only reason, but I am very comfortable with him. He's fun to play for. He lets me play my game, and I appreciate that. And, its always enjoyable to play with other players you consider friends. This is a good environment."

(Quickly, I was running out of time--The Time was 1:30PM at HARD ROCK--Ronnie needed to leave.)

Final question: If I asked you whether you still wanted to be here by the July 31st deadline, you may just well tell me: 'Sure,I like playing in Washington’. But, right now, you don’t control your destiny, until after the conclusion of the 2007 season. So, with that in mind, what has your 4 months in Washington done for your career? (SBF)

“Tough Question. I have always told myself, I came here for a reason. So, I am here for a reason. But, mostly to just play ball.” (He was guarded about this question-SBF).

Then, what’s your career goals down the line? (SBF)

“Nothing. Just keep playing hard. Honestly, I have already satisfied my goals in The Major Leagues. I was an All-Star one season. I won The World Series last year (with The St. Louis Cardinals). I have thought about winning a Gold Glove, but its not in my mind right now.”

But, the game is still fun to you? (SBF)

“Yes, IT IS!!” (Every Single Day?—SBF) Yes, definitely, I love coming to the ballpark every single day.”

And, Manny Acta’s not bad to play for, is he? (SBF)

(Laughing) “No, not at all. I love Manny. We go back a long way. He’s really a good person.”

My brief moment with Ronnie Belliard was up. He had to head off to RFK Stadium for that night’s game against The Colorado Rockies. As both of us walked out of The ESPN ZONE together with Our Nationals PR Staff--Ronnie was carrying his Bagged Up Lunch from The Restaurant. He hadn't had time to eat. So, I said to Ronnie: "Great, the Guest of Honor has to brown bag his lunch." Ronnie Belliard laughing: "Yeah, reminds me of The Minor Leagues."

Everyone chuckled. Belliard's Smile as wide as the playing field at RFK STADIUM.

Just A GREAT SMILE!!

The Continuing Saga

Honestly, you could not have scripted this any better. There were two outs, and D'Angelo Jimenez had just dribbled a grounder to right field, barely past The Colorado Rockies Todd Helton. RALLYTIME!! was in Full Effect. Ryan Zimmerman was at the plate. JORGE JULIO was on the mound. Yes, ONCE AGAIN, MY BOY!! Jorge Julio was battling Our Washington Nationals. This time, in a scoreless tie--in the bottom of the 8th inning. The Chant "COME ON!! Its Jorge Julio!!" again being shouted out of Section 320.

Anyone that had watched these two teams compete just two nights ago, realized the implications. Julio was moments away, that evening, from blowing yet another lead in the 8th, only to see Our Best Player make his biggest Mental Mistake of the Season--running on a pop out with less than two outs. An error that cost Our Washington Nationals, The Big Inning, against one of Baseball's Least Dependable Relievers. A Washington Loss that gave Jorge Julio, Some Saving Grace.

As has been well documented here on The Nats320 Blog, Jorge Julio has blown games--time after time, after time. Only luck saved him, his last time out at RFK STADIUM. So, inquiring minds wanted to know--Why in THE WORLD did Rockies Manager Clint Hurdle have Jorge in this game? At THIS TIME? Julio has been terrible in most every game he's ever played on East Capitol Street. No lead is ever safe with Number 50 on the mound. A Tie Ball Game, almost certainly, to become a Sure Loss.

And, MY BOY!! Did Not Disappoint.

While Ryan Zimmerman has always learned from his mistakes and improved--Jorge Julio has always fallen deeper into the depths of sorrow. Baseball is a Mental Game. A Chess Match that Our Number 11 understands. A Competition Julio fails to grasp. And, when Jorge's Manager signaled his catcher Yorvit Torrealba to intentionally walk Zimmerman, after a first pitch passed ball, to bring up the struggling Austin Kearns--you could see Jorge FUMING ON THE MOUND. Each successive intentional pass pitch, was retrieved back in Jorge's glove, in EVER GREATER ANGER. Julio always lets his emotions get to him. And, as Ryan trotted to first base--Jorge was standing on the back end of the mound--pounding his right throwing hand around the white resin bag. You can bet he was pissed. Disgruntled, because Ryan Zimmerman has always beaten him. Images he can't get out of his mind. A run scoring single two nights ago. A Grand Slam last May 13th--the very morning The Florida Marlins--tired of his antics--found a willing taker in These Same Colorado Rockies. At a time The Colorado Rockies needed a pitcher with self pause on the mound, Jorge Julio could only seek revenge. Jorge Julio can NEVER LET IT GO!!

Something, even The African Queen noticed: "They are going to regret walking "Z", she stated, with Zimmerman now standing on first base. "Colorado has no idea what they have just set up."

Number 50 took that Hand Dryer and fiercely threw it to the ground, upon the introduction of Kearns on the Stadium PA. Jorge Julio's attitude showed, he was already out this game--mentally. An Affair his Manager should have realized the very moment he threw his very first pitch to Austin--in the dirt. With the anticipation building, Section 320 Rocking and RFK STADIUM near pandemonium level--Jorge Julio would rare back and do what he has always done. The Most Freewheeling Fastball Pitcher in the Game attempted to throw his fastest pitch--RIGHT PAST Our Number 25. A toss everyone in This Great Game has come to expect from him. Austin Kearns LAUNCHED that Jorge Julio Fastball RIGHT INTO THE MEZZANINE--JUST INSIDE THE FOUL POLE, DOWN THE LEFT FIELD LINE--Under Section 443!! Some People JUST NEVER LEARN!!

THE OLD BALLYARD WAS SHAKING!! Austin Kearns had HAMMERED A THREE RUN HOMER!! 21,793 Patrons Mostly Rejoiced. Pandemonium at RFK STADIUM!! JUST LIKE THAT--JORGE JULIO HAD DONE IT AGAIN!!!--And in DEVASTATING FASHION for His Colorado Rockies. For his part, Julio just lowered his head, eventually wiped his jersey over his wet brow. He knew--he had cost his team the game--once again.

BANG!! ZOOM!! Go The Fireworks!! Our Washington Nationals now held a three run lead--courtesy of MY BOY!! How consistent can one pitcher possibly be? Really, "The Jorge Julio Phenomenon" is Other Worldly. The "JORGE JULIO" Chant THE VICTORY SONG THIS AFTERNOON in Section 320. RallyTime Richard's eyes BULGING IN MERRIMENT over the consistency of This Turning Point. BangTheDrumNatly giddy with delight. His High Fives stroked so hard to everyone within striking distance--the force probably could have sent that Julio Fastball over the fence--as well. WAS HE EVER HAPPY!!

The African Queen BEAMING--"I told you so. What did I tell you!!" Then, promptly planted on my lips--ONE FINE KISS!!

Indescribable the feeling within my soul over this Home Run. How many times, in my life, have I experienced such a moment with Jorge Julio. Originally, peeved and exasperated with him, while he played for The Baltimore Orioles. Now, My "BLOOD BROTHER" prompting GREAT JOY WITHIN MY HEART!!

Yeah, I know--"The Chief Cardiologist" followed with his best imitation of Jorge--but even Chad Cordero could not be outdone by MY BOY!! Jorge Julio--on this FABULOUS AFTERNOON at RFK STADIUM.

Curly "W" Number 42 will be remembered, by most, for one moment--Austin Kearns' BLAST into the Mezzanine. An Instant, I will always remember as "THE CONTINUING SAGA OF JORGE JULIO!!".

So--Will Jorge Julio be a Member of The Colorado Rockies by Monday Evening?

Wow!! Just Incredible!! Even I--CAN NOT BELIEVE IT!!

Game Notes & Highlights:

When Jorge Julio trotted out to the mound to start the bottom of the 8th--a Tour De Force Performance was upon us in Section 320. Did it ever get loud. And, when Pinch Hitter Ronnie Belliard singled to left leading off--The Decibel Level began to rise. A BOOM that DID NOT WAVER when FLop followed with, what appeared to be, a Rally Killing Double Play. Everyone In Section 320 Knew--Jorge Julio was still on the mound. A Two Out Rally was upon us--even D'Angelo Jimenez was not immune from The Jorge Julio Effect.

For the second consecutive day--Our Washington Nationals completely shutout a potent lineup. The Colorado Rockies have some good hitters. Players with power. Yet, today--Tim Redding pitched the FINEST GAME OF HIS CAREER in nearly three seasons. Pitching into the 7th--he just let The Rockies hit the ball, and allowed his fielders to make the defensive plays. Even a shot off his shin by Willy Taveras with two outs in the top of the 5th, did not phase him. Redding recovered, ran to the ball rolling toward first base--and dove while tossing the baseball to Tony Batista at first--to retire the fast moving Taveras. Today, was Tim Redding's Day. He showed The Management of Our Washington Nationals the innings eating performance many expected of him out of Spring Training. An achievement he failed at, miserably, coming out of Viera, Florida--this past March.

In the top of the 7th inning--Troy Tulowitzki grounded sharply in the hole between 3rd and Short--Ryan Zimmerman, Diving, JUST MISSED THE GROUNDER--But Felipe Lopez WAS BACKING UP THE PLAY. FLop ranging far to his right--reached down--scooped the ball, backhanded--then fired it across his body and the infield. A toss that Tony Batista scooped, perfectly, to retire Tulowitzki. FLop's effort, even better than Redding's shot off his shin--And, The Defensive Play of This Game. None of us in Section 320 could believe Lopez's range on that play. Really, it was a very fine effort.

"The Chief", Chad Cordero recorded his 19th save of the season this afternoon. But, not without some serious concern. Our Number 32 gave up the dreaded lead off walk to Brad Hawpe. And, when Troy Tulowitzki grounded to FLop at shortstop--a sure double play was in order. But, D'Angelo Jimenez could not get a good pivot throw off. His toss in the dirt--could not be scooped by Batista. With Troy now at first--Torrealba doubled to right center--JUST OFF Nook Logan's Glove. Logan had actually ranged far--but just couldn't reach the hit ball. A double for Yorvit--and trouble for "The Chief Cardiologist". The murmurings beginning in the stands. But, like he always does--Chad Cordero bares down in the clutch. This time, striking out Jeff Baker for out number two. Then, forcing Willy Taveras to Pop Out to Tony Batista at first--to end the game!!! Thankfully.

Having now won three straight series at RFK Stadium--Our Washington Nationals recorded their VERY FIRST BACK TO BACK SHUTOUTS while playing in Our Nation's Capital. As The Montreal Expos--The Franchise's last back to back shutouts occured at Atlanta--April 2nd & 3rd, 2003.

Austin Kearns Game Winning Home Run was his First Homer since May 21st at Cincinnati. A 52 Game Drought.

Finally--The Presidents Race this afternoon provided some serious intrigue. "Teddy" actually ran the race and was neck to neck with GW, Abe & Thom the entire distance down the Warning Track toward Home Plate. GW used the outside lane to win at the last moment. When The Presidents posted up in the tunnel, just to the left of Section 320 before the 7th Inning Stretch--everyone belted out "Let Teddy Win!!", then followed by "TEDDY--What Happened?" All Teddy could do was shrug his shoulders and place his index finger and thumb together exclaiming: "THIS CLOSE!!"

RallyTimeRichard suggesting: "Maybe Teddy understands the Concept of Racing for the very first time."

Redemption Day

Less than two years ago, he was one of Baseball's Best SetUp Men. For three seasons, he pitched in 214 Games to a Very Solid ERA of 2.70. No, he wasn't an All Star--only because he played in Major League Baseball's Wasteland--Montreal--for two of those seasons. But, when those Expos moved south of the Canadian Border to Our Nation's Capital--people took notice.

Luis Ayala was one seriously good reliever. No, Our Number 56 had not been named an All Star--but he was celebrated among his teammates. During that Fabulous 2005 Inaugural Season of Our Washington Nationals--then Manager Frank Robinson sent Luis out to the mound, seemingly, every single night. If he wasn't setting up "The Chief", he was extending a ball game to get a win in Extra Innings. And 68 games into 2005, his elbow had enough. He was shut down, had minor surgery--done for the season. But, then came back way too soon to compete in The World Baseball Classic the following spring. Pressured by former Teammates Esteban Loaiza and Vinny Castilla, his Native Land--Mexico--wanted him for that Inaugural Classic during Spring Training--2006.

Despite Pleas from then Nationals Management--Major League Baseball--Ayala succumbed to that pressure to pitch for his Home Mexico. And, he blew out his elbow. Year Ending Surgery the result. Not only had Luis lost his season, but the respect of some of his Washington teammates, as well. For 18 Months, Luis Ayala sat on the sidelines wondering if he would ever enjoy This Great Game Again. Injuries will do that to you. Never do you know, until you actually toe that rubber and pitch with the game on the line.

Since returning to The Major League Roster in June--Our Number 56 has been brought along slowly. Get an out here, save a big inning from developing there--but never has Our Manager Manny Acta put Luis Ayala out on the mound--WITH EVERYTHING TO LOSE. At least until this afternoon. Our Washington Nationals held the slimmest of leads, 1-0 on the heels of Felipe Lopez--YES, FLop!!--blasting out, lefthanded, a NO DOUBT Home Run to Right Field in the bottom of the 6th. Never did I believe Felipe would EVER HIT ANY HOMER at RFK Stadium, except for a liner down the line. Yet, like Ronnie Belliard earlier this week, when he also Homered to Left Center against The Houston Astros--Baseball continues to surprise me. The Rockies Rodrigo Lopez served up Felipe Lopez' Homer.

The Baseball Gods were looking down on FLop this Saturday. A Glance those Deities were also giving toward Luis Ayala this afternoon. This past Monday, against those Astros--Luis pitched his worst inning of his short season. Facing just three batters, he hit the first one, then walked the final two. Many times, pitchers recovering from elbow surgery, lose their control--their working parts no longer in unison. After being away for such a long time recuperating--you have to expect it. A recovery that Luis made up for just two nights ago against these same Colorado Rockies. Called on to stretch the game to allow a Washington Comeback--Our Fine Set Up Man returned to form--going an impressive two complete innings. His Six Up & Six Down Performance gave his teammates the opportunity to win in 10.

A victory that night that gave Our Manager "The Confidence" to put Luis Ayala into this afternoon's affair against The Rockies. Washington Starter Mike Bacsik had pitched six strong innings and was working his way through the 7th--when he finally tired. Two walks, to Todd Helton and Ryan Spillborghs, had put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Manny has said, all season long--he doesn't want to see a good start, by any of his starters wasted, by keeping them in the game too long. So, after Spillborghs walked--here came Manny--walking slowly to the mound.

Acta could have chosen any number of relievers, including newly arrived Chris Booker from AAA Columbus. But, he stuck with the veteran. Someone with experience. Someone who had faced this exact situation before. Manny trusted Luis Ayala.

Ayala trotted out to the mound and took his warmups. Colorado's Young Star, Troy Tulowitski, was watching intently in the On Deck Circle. Tulowitski--he of the TITANIC HOME RUN to Section 444 of RFK, in the first game of this series. Finally, Home Plate Umpire Adrian Johnson motioned "PLAY BALL". While Luis dug his foot into the mound, Troy burrowed his feet in at The Batters Box. Each knowing, The Game Was On The Line.

But, after Ayala threw his first two pitches for balls one and two--everyone in the VERY LARGE CROWD of 31,674 began to worry. After all, Luis was in trouble--Tulowitski figured he would get something to hit. A swing that on Ayala's third pitch Troy fouled off for strike one. Then, Colorado's Shortstop took a called strike. Just like that--Manny's Choice to keep the slimmest of leads was back even. Ayala had something to play with--which he did, by throwing the 5th pitch of this At-Bat off the plate. Tulowitski didn't bite.

The Count was now full. All the runners would be going on the very next pitch. A single in the gap, may well give The Rockies the lead. Luis Ayala looked in for the sign from Brian Schneider. Ryan Tulowitski steadied himself at the plate. Many Nationals Fans slowly rising to their feet. The Crescendo had been building. The Climax now upon us. Luis Ayala, looking for redemption, wanting to belong again, willingly rared back and fired a 92 MPH Fastball RIGHT PAST THE SWINGING Troy Tulowitski. RFK STADIUM ERUPTED IN GREAT JOY!!. Luis Ayala fist pumped in glory. A feeling he had not felt in quite some time.

This was A SEMINAL MOMENT. After nearly two years of inactivity--the harboring thoughts of doubt, remorse and the ability to compete at the Major League Level--Luis Ayala was again significant. A Gravity not lost on anybody watching at The Old Ballyard. A WELL DESERVED STANDING OVATION from the faithful. A meeting at The Dugout by each and everyone of his fellow Nationals Teammates. His Manager, Our Manager welcoming one of Baseball's Top Set Up Men, back into the fold. The Baseball Gods had spoken--Luis Ayala had suffered enough. He had EARNED BACK HIS RESPECT. The World Baseball Classic now a distant memory. He deserved this so much. I couldn't be happier for Our Number 56.

Today, this Saturday, Was REDEMPTION DAY for Luis Ayala.

A 1-0 lead was preserved, added on to later with a two run single by Pinch Hitter Tony Batista, and saved by Chad Cordero. But really, this game was all about JUST ONE OUT. Our Washington Nationals needed 27 outs to defeat The Colorado Rockies today 3-0. But, none Bigger than Troy Tulowitski Striking Out to end the 7th inning.

Curly "W" number 41 was one solid win. Washington 4th Shutout of an opponent this season. The Bang!! ZOOM!! of the Fireworks!! the final celebration of Luis Ayala's return to form.

Game Notes & Highlights:

Yeah, I know Mike Bacsik pitched strongly into the 7th, leaving with a shutout in tact. And yeah, I know, Tony Batista knocked in two key insurance runs with two outs and two strikes in the 8th. They will be the top stories in all the media outlets. But, tell me--which of those players respresents the Future of Our Washington Nationals more than Luis Ayala. Bacsik has pitched well of late--but is not an answer. Tony Batista is on borrowed time. Ayala's efforts today is key in deciding his Future With Our Washington Nationals.

Luis Ayala was one of Our Highlights of attending Spring Training in Viera, Florida this past February. The entire week The African Queen and I were there, he would always stop to say hello, take a picture or chat for the blog. We couldn't thank him enough. Another reason, Sohna and I are so very pleased at his successful comeback.

FLop not only providing the game winning run, but also a top fielding play. In the top of the 8th inning, The Rockies Willy Taveras laced a hard grounder into the hole between Lopez and Ryan Zimmerman. Felipe dove, full out, to snare the baseball while slamming his body to the ground. Then, had enough presence to quickly get up, fire a toss across the infield, in the dirt--which Tony Batista scooped--TO JUST GET THE FAST MOVING TAVERAS. Unquestionably, FLop with The Defensive Play of This Game. Felipe Lopez is mighty talented, he just seems lost at times. It would be great to get a better understanding about Felipe Lopez, the person. Maybe then, we can understand him more.

Our Washington Nationals played a very interesting bottom of the 7th inning. My Main Man!! Ryan Church led off with a sharp double to right--followed by an Austin Kearns walk. The Rockies then replaced their starter, Rodrigo Lopez, with Jeremy Affeldt. With Robert Fick the scheduled left handed swinger, against the the lefthanded Affeldt--Manny Acta sent D'Angelo Jimenez to the plate. I don't have a problem with the move, just why would you pinch hit--just to bunt the runners up. Which, is what Jimenez accomplished. Then, after Brian Schneider grounded out to Jamey Carroll at second base, send up Dimitri Young to pinch hit for Nook Logan--knowing, in all likelihood, Colorado would intentionally walk Our Number 21?

Which they did also. Thus, setting up Our Manager's Final Move--pinch hitting for Ayala with Tony Batista after pinch running for Young with Ryan Langerhans. And, wouldn't you know it, Batista would stroke a two out, two strike grounder through hole in left to score Church and Kearns with the final two runs of this game. Sure--in the long run--those maneuvers all played out in Washington's advantage, but at the expense of their entire bench, save Jesus Flores.

I am not saying Manny Acta is wrong. I just would love to ask him why? Why this way?

Mike Bacsik picked up his 3rd win of the season today. Just a few weeks ago, Our Number 37 appeared to be on borrowed time. Now, its likely he will last the remainder of the season. "The Most Thrilling Closer In The Game" was lights outs in the 9th today. Chad Cordero picked up his 18th save of the season, that included a terrific strikeout of Colorado's Best Hitter, Matt Holliday on a 90 MPH HEATER in the top of the 9th. After missing that third strike, Holliday looked at his bat to see if there was a hole in it. Even he could not believe, he was overmatched by "The Chief". I think I even saw Chad chuckle to himself over the sight of Holliday.

Ryan Zimmerman made one of his patented charge in on a bunt throwing hand pickup and tosses--all in one motion to retire Yorvit Torrealba for an out in the 9th. When Ryan does not rush himself, and just executes he is arguably one of baseball's finest fielders. But, when he starts thinking too much, he gets himself in trouble. As he did on the very first play of this game, when Taveras bunted down the line, Ryan ran in--scooped up the ball barehanded--had plenty of time--but threw the baseball down the right field line. You could just see, he was trying to be too perfect. Instead of just reacting. Not complaining--just something we have all noticed from Section 320.

On Veterans Appreciation Day, among the ceremonies honoring those who protect our Freedom, was the FABULOUS SIGHT of The US Army "BlackDaggers" Parachute Team landing on the field at RFK STADIUM. While a Parachute Spotter trailing red smoke targeted the stadium from the sky--three separate "BlackDaggers" parchuted onto the field to HUGE APPLAUSE. Clapping that rose to an even greater level when Two Additional Parachutists--one standing on the shoulder of another landed in leftfield waving an American Flag. It was a GREAT EFFORT. The Sight of many pointing to the sky and watching the show--exciting to see.

And what a crowd to watch it. On the afternoon of the only game played by Our Washington Nationals this entire season--not on television--31,674 posted up on a GORGEOUS LATE AFTERNOON. To attract such a following against a team like Colorado, that does not travel well--when it comes to their fans--a really good sign that Our Team may well reach 2 Million this season in attendance, after all.

Finally--We had a medical emergency for a patron in Section 320 during the last half of the 6th inning and parts of the 7th. Fortunately, the sick fan will be fine. But, the fact that Ushers and Security called EMT's--A Medical Crew that is stationed just two sections away from us, down the left field line--AND DID NOT SHOW UP FOR 20 MINUTES--WAS INEXCUSABLE!! The EMT's claimed they had another call. Yet, more than one of the Ushers said they were definitely just sitting in their Medical Office. What would have happened--if this incident had been far worse. Even when they finally arrived in Section 320--they showed little hurry. Thanks for caring.

Courtesy Of--Jorge Julio!!

It took nearly 2 Hours & 30 Minutes, and into the 8th Inning to FINALLY!! get this game started. Courtesy of--JORGE JULIO!! Yes, Jorge Julio, My Boy, was back at RFK Stadium. No lead is ever safe with Number 50 on the mound. Julio has crashed landed time after time at RFK Stadium. In fact, the very last time Jorge Julio was seen on East Capitol Street, was at 1:42AM last May 13, when Ryan Zimmerman unloaded a Grand Slam in the bottom of the ninth to defeat The Florida Marlins--ONE OF THE FINEST COMEBACKS IN WASHINGTON HISTORY!! Before an Ecstatic Friends & Family Gathering--of just 76 folks.

Yeah--You Had to Be there. That was ONE FINE MORNING-THAT NIGHT.

In 2007, Jorge Julio has played for three different Major League Teams (Arizona, Florida & Colorado). No lead is ever safe when he enters. His Manager's always hope he will record the necessary outs. His Opposing Manager's well know Jorge gives them hope. Everyone Realizes--Blowing a Save--not an unlikely event with Jorge Julio on the mound. And, you thought "The Chief" was the "Most Thrilling Closer In The Game"?

Yes, I know--Julio and I have one FABULOUS HISTORY (We might be considered Blood Brothers if I counted the number of times our lives have crossed on His Blown Saves while attendiing Baltimore Orioles Games at Camden Yards). And, when Manager Clint Hurdle sent Jorge to the mound for The Colorado Rockies in the bottom of the eighth tonight, he made me wonder. "Clint--What in world are you thinking of? Do you have ANY IDEA how terrible Julio has been at RFK Stadium?" The Most CAVERNOUS OF BALLYARDS plays like a Ping Pong Table when Jorge Julio enters any game here. "You have to know that--right?"

Of course, Section 320 noticed this move by The Rockies--the very moment Jorge stepped out of the leftfield, visitors bullpen. "Come ON!!! Its Jorge Julio" was the Warrior Cry--Once AGAIN!! Our Washington Nationals were down 3-0, had accomplished nothing against Colorado Starter Aaron Cook for the first seven innings. But, just like that--this game was in the balance. No lead is ever safe with Julio on the mound.

Even, with FLop leading off.

With RALLYTIME!! IN FULL EFFECT--Felipe Lopez led off the bottom of the 8th with a clean single to right field. Mr. & Mrs. MickNats, RallyTimeRichard, BangTheDrumNatly, SenatorNat, The African Queen, Abby's Dad Mike & Grandma, Scott, John, Richard & Myself all rose for the occasion. Section 320 was ROCKING!! Everyone along the third base side of the park--turned to look. Ahead 3-0, Jorge was already digging himself a hole after just one batter. A cavity that turned into a cavern, when Ronnie Belliard followed, also with a grounder to right--FLop scurrying to third base. EVERY ONE of the 27,581 in attendance were on their feet now. RFK STADIUM was SHAKING for the first time tonight.

"JORGE JULIO!!--Dat, Dat, Dat, Dat, Dat--JORGE JULIO!!--DAT, DAT, DAT, DAT, DAT!!" was heard from Section 320. BangTheDrumNatly providing some SERIOUS PERCUSSION. The African Queen pounding away on her empty beer bottle. Tonight, provided by Bud Light. This was serious FUN!! Not a sole watching believed for ONE SECOND--that Jorge Julio was not GOING TO BLOW IT!!

And, when Ryan Zimmerman swung at the Julio's first offering--SHATTERING HIS BAT--but getting enough OOMPH!! on the ball to send it to short center field--scoring Felipe with Washington's First RUN. This game appeared all but won. Just three batters after taking the mound--Jorge Julio had opened up a chasm. Was The Old Ballyard EVER LOUD!!

No Outs, Belliard advancing to 3rd. "Z" on first. Even a visit to the mound by The Rockies Pitching Coach--Bob Apodaca could not quell the building enthusiasm. "Keep Jorge IN!!, KEEP JORGE IN!!" now being chanted in Section 320. A Shout Out CHEERED MIGHTILY, when Apodaca left the mound--with Jorge Julio still in the game.

Due to a double switch earlier in the game, Saul Rivera was the next scheduled hitter. For reasons, unbeknownst to me--Dimitri Young was a late scratch from tonight's starting lineup. Robert Fick started in his place. In this instance--Rivera had entered the game batting in the fourth spot for Ryan Church. So, Our Manager Manny Acta made the right move--he sent "Da Meat Hook" to the plate in an attempt to either tie or break open this affair. Who else to breach Julio's wide abyss? DID RFK STADIUM EVER RESPOND!!!

A Standing Ovation for Our 2007 All Star!! The Chance for Dimitri Young to redeem himself for yesterday's ejection from the game. Our Number 21 knew what to expect. Jorge Julio--one is of the most freewheeling fastball pitchers in the game. Then he threw a off speed pitch--fooling Dimitri badly. Surprisingly--Jorge came back with a similar pitch. Young grounding to Todd Helton at first base. Zimmerman advancing to second. You could FEEL the disappointment among the faithful. That crevasse that Julio had opened, didn't look as large. How fitting would it have been for Dimitri to provide the game changing blow.

But, with one out, Our Washington Nationals still had runners on 2nd and 3rd--Austin Kearns at the plate. "Come ON!! Its Jorge Julio!!" still being shouted out of Section 320. There was NO WAY Julio Escapes. And once again, for the second consecutive evening--Clint Hurdle decided NOT to intentionally walk a batter to load the bases and set up a double play situation. Personally, I find that strange. Yeah, walking Kearns puts the winning run on first. But, it sure seems like the better percentage play.

Yet, The Rockies pitched to Austin. Jorge Julio tossing in ball one. The Crowd was now standing. Everyone was ROARING. For this night--the moment to follow was THE INSTANT that NO ONE WILL FORGET--For Some Time. With JORGE JULIO!! Yes, Jorge Julio struggling on the mound--Our Number 25 would receive a fastball right off the inside part of the plate. Swinging--Austin lazily popped the ball just over second base into short centerfield. Rockies Second Baseman Kaz Matsui had an easy play on the baseball. Out Number Two was coming. But, for whatever reason--soundness I can not explain--Ryan Zimmerman either thought there were two outs--or the baseball was going to drop.

With Belliard retreating to third--"Z-Man" realized far too late--his serious mistake. Matsui easily tossed to Troy Tulowitski at second base to double off Our Number 11. Inexplicably--Ryan Zimmerman had made THE FATAL MISTAKE. That one time hole--now a crater--had been shut--in the most egregious way. YOU COULD HEAR A PIN DROP AT RFK STADIUM. Followed by The Boos.

Our Best Player, had made one HUGE MENTAL MISTAKE--And Ran Our Washington Nationals out of the Game. Zimmerman so pissed off at himself--he flung his batting helmet clear across the infield toward Third Base Coach Tim Tolman. Then, proceeded to turn and walk dejectedly back toward second base in disgust. He had paid a hard price for his blunder.

Jorge Julio had survived--and it had less to due with his talent--than luck.

Inning Over, RALLYTIME OVER!! And, This Game--Definitely Over!! Ryan Zimmerman had saved Jorge Julio from his Predetermined Destiny--at least for this night. Final Score--Colorado Rockies 3, Our Washington Nationals 1.

I still can't believe he got out of that jam. But, This Game Will Be Remembered, For Some Time.

Courtesy Of--Once Again--Jorge Julio!!

Game Notes & Highlights:

Leading off the bottom of the 5th--Brian Schneider hammered an Aaron Cook pitch to the wall in right, just in front of Washington's Bullpen. Rockies Rightfielder Ryan Spillborghs ran hard to the fence and leaped at the very last moment. What seemed to be a SURE HOME RUN was caught by Spillborghs as in backed into the wall. Everyone thought it was out--until Ryan Showed First Base Umpire Adrian Johnson the baseball in his mitt. Ryan Spillborghs made The Defensive Play of This Game.

With Jason Simontacchi going on the 15 Day Disabled List today, Pitching Coach Randy St.Claire received a decent effort from makeshift starter--Billy Traber, who was followed by Chris Schroeder, Ray King, Saul Rivera and Big Jon Rauch. Traber hurt himself on a terrible error fielding a bunt in the Colorado's two run 3rd inning. But, no one hit the baseball hard tonight off any Washington Pitcher. A Night Our Manager received a better than expected emergency start from Traber. On an evening once again--Washington's Bats were mostly silent.

Speaking of Simontacchi--Abby's Dad--Mike and I were discussing last night how each and every time Our Washington Nationals proclaim a pitcher is going to be day to day--that very player ends up going on The Disabled List. Then, the next thing you know--said pitcher is gone for a few months or the season. Mike & I just nodded our heads in acceptance of the Official Word that Jason is on The 15 Day DL. Chris Booker expected to be called up tomorrow.

I would be curious to know whether Dimitri Young not starting was a disciplinary move--with his ejection last night.

The Rockies Aaron Cook may have pitched seven scoreless innings, but Our Washington Nationals had their chances to score--many times before that fateful 8th. Once again, no clutch hits with runners in scoring position.

Did The Racing Presidents EVER HEAR IT TONIGHT!! As has become custom--GW, Thom, Abe & Teddy post up in The Tunnel next to Section 320 to head down to the Nats Dugout for the 7th Inning Stretch. Each and EVERY TIME they appear next to us--We all start chanting "LET TEDDY WIN!! LET TEDDY WIN!!" Very popular this has become. Tonight--the chant reached FEVER PITCH--when just about everyone within earshot chimed it. "LET TEDDY WIN!!" WAS LOUD. And, the sight of Teddy always waving his hands and jumping up and down--hilarious. As funny as--GW, Thom & Abe waving their hands "NO" across their chests in response. In Section 320, we love it when Our Presidents show up for the 7th Inning Stretch. Every Single Game, They are a Highlight for Us. This Evening--a Feature for Many More.

All weekend long--The United States Marines are collecting Toys For Tots In July. So, The African Queen and I decided to drop off some unwrapped, unused Toys for their Drive this evening at The Main Gate. For bringing some items, The Marines offered us any of a number of Nationals Promotional Items. Of course--we chose the "SCREECH" BobbleBelly. What Else!!
The Marines were kind enough to take a photo with Sohna.

Finally--there were two Die Hard Washington Nationals Fans and Nats320 Readers that showed up tonight with two FANTASIC TEE-Shirts. On the front, Dimitri Young was depicted--with the wording--"KEEP DMITRI". On the back of their shirts were printed "TRADE CLINT". To The Host of Nats TV Clint's GREAT CREDIT!! He took the shirts for what they were meant to be--FUN!! All of The NatPack enjoyed a good laugh. Clint posing for pictures with these two GREAT FANS!! Really, they were funny. And, that's all it was--FOR FUN! Huge Props To Clint For Enjoying The Moment!!

An Improbable Win

First Our Washington Nationals fell behind early. Then Our Hottest Hitter got ejected. Followed by repeated failures at the plate with runners in scoring position. Not much was going right against The Colorado Rockies tonight at RFK Stadium. Then, just when you believed a definite loss was at hand, Our Manager pulled all the right buttons. His Bullpen trotted out to pitch 4 STELLAR PERFECT INNINGS--12 Up & 12 Down. And, his bench came alive with the two key strokes of this ball game.

Our Washington Nationals were now going CRAZY on the field! Number 6 wearing the Home Whites was being pummeled in Jubilation. What was left of 20,573 were jumping up and down in celebration at RFK Stadium. How in the world did Our Washington Nationals pull this game out? The Fact that this ballgame had reached THIS conclusion, was UNTHINKABLE, over three hours earlier. One of the oddest 5-4 Victories over The Colorado Rockies, you will ever witness.

A Game that also featured a TITANIC TWO RUN SHOT, just two batters into this game. The "Houdini" Act by "Our Starter In Training" to actually last 6 full innings (when it appeared he could not possibly make it out of the 4th). While Colorado's Starter was humbling Washington's Hitters in his third Major League Start. The Continuing Failure by Our Washington Nationals to plate runners in scoring position--countless times. And, yes, Manny Acta actually emptying his bench. This game went down to his final available hitter.

When you have just One Hit in 25 At-Bats, you have to figure D'Angelo Jimenez is going to be The Last Resort--no matter what. He only plays, if no one else is available. Just such a scenario played out tonight. Heading into the bottom of the 10th this evening, tied at four--Colorado's LaTroy Hawkins was on the mound, pitching into his third inning. The Rockies usual closer--Brian Fuentes was unavailable, having pitched in three straight games (UPDATE--Fuentes is on The Disabled List as I have been soundly corrected). And when Austin Kearns led off with a clean single up the middle to get the Home Crowd Going, Brian Schneider had no choice but to sacrifice bunt Kearns to second. Setting up the decisive final events. Big Jon Rauch was the scheduled hitter. Manny made the only move available to him. Acta had used up all his bench players, save Jimenez now. D'Angelo was sent to the plate to pinch hit. With one out, you had to question why The Rockies now decided to even pitch to D'Angelo. Sure--he's not helped so far this season. But, would you not want to set up a possible inning ending double play and pitch to Washington's next hitter--Nook Logan? Logan had already grounded out off Hawkins, with the go ahead run on third in the bottom of the 8th.

Sure seemed liked a no brainer, to walk Jimenez. To most everyone's surprise--The Rockies did not. Especially, after LaTroy threw a wild pitch, sending Kearns to third base.

With D'Angelo actually now getting the opportunity to bat, even he had to realize, there are nine separate ways to score from third base with less than two outs. Could Our Washington Nationals actually find even one of those and win. Rockies Manager Clint Hurdle advanced this possibility when he decided to draw in his infield and not walk Jimenez. Hawkins had shown little control all night. Only the impatience at the hands of Washington Bats--had kept him in the game. Yet, D'Angelo must have finally understood the message. BE PATIENT. Look for something good to hit. He first took ball one--as The Crowd Rose to its feet. When Jimenez took ball two, the now excited throng let out a HUGE ROAR. Everyone sensing, almost in disbelief--Washington Might WIN!!

With a 2-0 count in his favor--Jimenez stared out at Hawkins. This was THE TIME. Exactly 3 hours & 30 Minutes after this arduous affair began, who was going to blink first. The struggling hitter, or the suffering reliever.

LaTroy tossed in his pitch of choice. Not a good one. And, D'Angelo Jimenez finally delivered!! He of .040 Batting Average. A liner right up the middle to win, not a chance for any Colorado fielder to retrieve it. Austin Kearns scored this game's winning run. And, Our Washington Nationals ran jubilantly onto the field!!! Even Our Manager Manny Acta was seen jumping up and down. First with Ryan Zimmerman. Then, with the gleeful Jimenez.

An inconceivable victory because little did anyone believe that Our Washington Nationals would win at 7:15PM this evening. Only 2 hitters into the game, Matt Chico had already walked leadoff hitter Wily Taveras, then served up ONE MAMMOTH TWO HOME RUN, to Section 444 down the left field line, to Rockies Rookie Sensation Troy Tulowitski. By 8:15PM, Our Number 47 was down 4-1 when he, again, gave up a Two Run Blast to left center to Garrett Atkins, after walking Todd Helton. Chico was showing little control, less command.

In between these belts by The Rockies, Dimitri Young made a foolish mistake. Its one thing to argue a called strike three with an umpire. Its way out of bounds to turn back around--after having your say--to continue the battle--while your team has runners in scoring position. And, then get yourself thrown out of the ballgame. Being in attendance tonight, as always, I have no idea whether Dimitri Young had a legitimate beef or not with Home Plate Umpire Rob Drake during that 3rd inning mess. But Our 2007 All Star didn't act like one. His ejection from RFK Stadium this evening, completely changed the outcome, forcing Our Manager Manny Acta to make a flurry of moves and maneuvers in an attempt to get Our Washington Nationals back into this game against The Colorado Rockies.

Eventually, it worked.

But, not before repeated failures at the plate with runners in scoring position. You name the player for Our Washington Nationals and most all of them left runners on base in this game. Finally, Our Manager got his desired result--in an unexpected way and unlikely source. Time and Time again Manny Acta had gone to his bench. First with Robert Fick to replace the departed Dimitri Young. Then, Tony Batista to pinch hit in the 6th. Now--he chose Jesus Flores with runners on first and second with two outs. Down 4-2, MY Main Man!! Ryan Church had singled to right off Colorado's Jeremy Affeldt, followed by Austin Kearns being Hit by Pitch.

Our Rule V Draftee has shown plenty of promise--in the field. Less so standing at the plate. Tonight--that pledge turned to aptitude. Our Number 3 stroked a liner to right that would score Church easily with Washington's Third Run, but turned into GLORY, when Rockies rightfielder Brad Hawpe let the ball GO RIGHT THROUGH HIS LEGS!! Kearns was on the GO!! And easily scored this game's tying run. Jesus Flores was standing on third happily clapping his hands together. He had DELIVERED, WITH THE GAME ON THE LINE AND TWO OUTS!! Just like that. Our Washington Nationals were back in it. What a ROAR from the Nats Faithful, when that baseball was botched by Hawpe. The Head Jumping along the third base side had returned. An unexpected party was beginning.

A Celebration that reached its Climax in the 10th--when D'Angelo Jimenez set off The BANG!! ZOOM!! of The Fireworks. An improbable win this Curly "W" Number 40. A TRIUMPH TRULY BEYOND BELIEF!! Only Baseball can continually provide such theatrics.

Game Notes & Highlights:

When Dimitri Young started his argument with Umpire Drake, where in world was Manny Acta? Ryan Church attempted to step between Young and Drake--but Our Manager was slow footed getting out of the Dugout to protect his man. Manny, I know you are not the arguing type. I understand. But, your hottest hitter was getting himself in a serious mess. Get out there. FAST.

How in world does Matt Chico Survive sometimes? 7 Hits allowed, 3 walks, 107 pitches thrown. He was all over the place tonight, yet somehow hung in there, once again. NOTHING MUST WORRY THIS YOUNG MAN. Matt Chico is fearless. That's impressive--even when his game is not.

Luis Ayala was lights out tonight. After struggling on Monday Night, walking two and hitting one Astro batter in his only inning--Our Number 56 started off The Perfect Game by Our Bullpen Tonight. Six up, Six Down for Luis. "The Chief" followed with a 1-2-3 9th. And, "The Wookie" a scoreless 10th and recipient of The WIN, his 4th of 2007. Big Jon did not wear his HIGH RED SOCKS that made him look so large yesterday. The Rockies saw his usual long white pants, no socks showing.

There was nice scene in the top of the 9th with Chad Cordero on the mound. For about the Billionth time, Ryan Zimmerman made a fine defensive play. This time, "Z" charged in toward the mound to pickoff a Jamey Carroll grounder. Reaching down, gloving the baseball, then tossing the ball to first in one motion--Carroll was out by a step. Cordero standing right next to Ryan as he finished off the play--patted Zimmerman on his right shoulder in thanks for his efforts. There could not be a single player on Our Team that does not understand the talent Our Number 11 possesses.

After Flores game tying two run hit and error, Manny sent Nook Logan out to pinch hit for Ayala. The Rockies countermoved with LaTroy Hawkins. The Game is tied. Its the bottom of the 8th. Jesus represents the go ahead run. "The Most Thrilling Closer In The Game" is warming up. Hawkins well known for his limited control. What does Logan do? He swings at the very first pitch, low and outside--grounds out to short--to kill the rally! Sorry, but Nook Logan does not understand the nuances of this game. This Ball Game was there for the taking. And, Our Number 7, wasn't thinking, nor using experience to his advantage. No reason to swing at LaTroy's very first offering. NONE!!!

And, while I am on the subject--lets please get rid of Tony Batista. Not Helping. Never Will. Just about anyone else would be better. Whether its Casto, Restovich, Castro, you name him--I would rather have any one of them over Batista. ANYONE!!

With two runs already in for The Rockies, thanks to Atkins Homer in the 4th-Colorado had runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Looking to break this game open, Wily Taveras laced a liner down the right field line. Robert Fick--in for the departed Young--dove to his left--AND CAUGHT THE BASEBALL. Our Number 13 saved Chico and two additional runs from scoring. His effort was The Defensive Play of This Game.

Colorado started Ubaldo Jimenez tonight. Making his third ever Major League Appearance, he had Washington hitters fooled most all night. This Jimenez pitched into the 6th and was in the position for a win, until his bullpen let him down.

Matt Chico & Ubaldo Jimenez combined to throw 213 pitches. With both lasting into the 6th inning--this game was one slow moving affair. Almost American League style, in its dawdling clip.

Finally, The Debut of Our Number 1 Draft Pick: Ross Detwiler, Washington’s top pick (6th overall) in this June’s draft, made his pro debut this afternoon with the GCL Nationals...Detwiler tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits against the GCLDodgers...he struck out 3 and did not walk a batter...he threw 30 pitches/19 strikes. You can bet, many of Washington's Top Brass were on hand in Florida to watch that one.
